. . .
"That is mine!"
The outraged roar of ownership echoed around the desert as Chehalis bared his teeth, his kingly mane fluffing around his neck with outrage. Sakmet rolled her topaz eyes, but dropped the filched gold trinket all the same.
"My sincerest apologies, king." she said snarkishly, the sarcasm in her tone thicker than Amazonian quicksand. Her golden claws sunk deep into the soft earth, and she clenched her teeth, holding back more words she would like to snap at him with. She was better than this. She shouldn't be treated like this by an equal. If you could even consider him your equal. she thought to herself with a smirk. If his soul wasn't so tarnished, she probably would have taken it in a rageful outburst by now.
"Shut your greedy mouths, stop your stupid, meaningless bickering, and let's get going already. This hot sand burns my paws."
Modus's deep rumble was annoyed, and his eyes flashed as the two 'Royals' cast him unamused glares.
Sakmet sighed, turning quickly and flicking her jewel-encrusted tail as she began to pad into the seemingly endless horizon. The heat was oppressive, and the trio felt it. Before long, Chehalis was trailing behind, his pelt weighed down from the gold he carried. The only thing that drove the vain Sakmet farther on was her pride. The still unamused Modus, light from the lack of jewels he carried, trod on, jaw slack to expose a thick, pink tongue and sharp, white fangs, which gleamed as he panted to evaporate away a bit of the noon-time heat.
"This better be worth it," Chehalis panted, on the verge of a moan. Expecting no reply and receiving exactly that, Chehalis rolled his eyes, shaking sand from his pelt. Though refusing to say it, the other Ahz felt the same. It was a long journey from their kingdom on the other side of the desert that stretched across the southern bit of Ahzen, to the central clearing, lake and forest where the vortex had to kindly relocated itself to. Modus was convinced the vortex had done it out of spite for the king, adding another 25 miles to their trek of an already paw-numbing 94.
"I can start to make out the trees," Sakmet said, trying quite hard to keep the excitement she felt from seeping into her remark.
"Thank my lucky stars," Chehalis mumbled, trotting forward a few steps so he was no longer so far behind. The trio walked on silently until they had finally reached the treeline, hearts thumping in their chests and tongues lolling out of their mouths with exertion and heat. As luck would have it, they arrived just as Goelaef did. They all sat wordlessly in a row, their presence creating a sort of powerful aura around them that seethed and rolled, scaring away any close onlookers. Sakmet raised her chin, enjoying the feel of this power. Though small, power was power, and all three Ahz reveled in it.
Modus flicked in ear, motioning to his companions that the new Ahzenai was about to speak.
"I am looking," Goelaef said, "for a very specific kind of partner. They need not be human. They need not be a creature after myself. I am looking for a King, a Queen, an Emperor or Empress, a Pharaoh, a Caesar. A ruler of others. You need not be one yet, but I must see the potential in you to lead."
His words caused the three to look at each other and elicit knowing smiles- for Goelaef had perfectly described each of them. Rulers. Emperors. Queen. Creatures of power and leadership.
Goelaef moved and his audience shifted with this movement, a slight tilt of the head as he looked sidelong at the wooers. "Approach me only if you are confident in yourself. I admire strength of character. A ruler should not falter. And I am indeed a ruler."
Chehalis let loose a dark, pleased chuckle and rose to his golden paws. Sakmet and Modus rose immediately after, taking their positions at his sides, Sakmet to the right, Modus the left. The threesome dispersed the crowd easily, cutting it right down the center as smoothly as butter.
You couldn't say they didn't know how to make an entrance.
Their confidence formed a blockade to the onlookers, who remained a few feet back in stunned silence as Sakmet and Chehalis stepped forward to greet Goelaef.
"Emperor,"
"Emperor,"
They rumbled in unison, greeting the new Ahz. Sakmet flattened her ears, letting forth a sound of discontent at being talked over. Chehalis, knowing she was better with words, let her talk, rolling his aquamarine eyes.
"It is a pleasure to be in the company of another royal such as yourself," Sakmet purred, bowing her head slightly, though it hurt her pride. "We three have traveled many miles to be in your presence, and seek your guidance. You see, we are rulers of a large kingdom, and it has been increasingly harder to manage."
She sighed in distress, her topaz irises shining up at him. Her lithe frame curved around him. "A queen such as myself needs more than just a King and a Knight. I need an Emperor to offer guidance. I think you have what it takes to rule the kingdom alongside us. Can you handle it, Emperor?" Sakmet purred with a smirk, begining to slink away. She flicked her tail for Chehalis and Modus to follow.
"If, that is, you can handle the pressure. Can't let the power get to you.."
Her voice whispered like a dry breeze over the clearing, as if it was part if the desert she had just crossed.
