Why did the partridge leave the tree? to get to the other side! the partridge softly patter-ed across the fresh, dewy snow, taking one last glance at the tree. soft moonlight shimmered over the pine forest, cradling the ice-covered needles in its ethereal glow. it was nearly time. carefully, the partridge fluttered into the air, avoiding the icy branches and dark holes where prowling creatures may lie. soaring through the forest, she kept a careful eye on her tiny satchel at her waist. the items must not be disturbed or she would jeopardize her entire mission. she carefully reviewed the ancient story her grandmother had cooed so long ago. once a year, since the dawn of time, one member of their family must travel to the Other Side to greet the king and present him with a gift. the elders of her clan must have considered it a curse, but she viewed it as a blessing. in the Other Side, she would get to see all of her loved ones that had passed, and bring them news from the Overworld. it had been her mother's task, and now it was hers. she couldn't wait to see her again. as she saw the pale blue glow guiding her towards the mountaintop, she shook herself out of her stupor. the time had almost arrived; she better not be late. the partridge flapped to a halt, adroitly landing on a rock just above the pulsating blue glow in the cliffside-clearing. she squinted up towards the moon, and held her breath. any second now. she felt the cool blue light slowly radiate into a deep purple glow, and knew it was time. with one last gulp, she dove into the Other Side.
