It was warming up this day I noticed. Since the winter days had been so cold lately, it amused me. How it seemed a day before or a day after my birthday, there always seemed to be a sudden flurry of snow. Odd wasn't it? However, it's been going on the past four years I must say. But that was back in December, and now it seemed during the exam break, the mood of the sun seemed to lift. Allowing us weary study kids to have a fresh breath of air without freezing after a second. It was nice, refreshing to be able to walk around now that all my exams were over. Shaking my head, chiding myself in my mother's voice at how little warmth to protect me from the slight chill I was wearing. A simply scarf, with pastel coloured stripes, that was the softest to the touch. A hoodie, my usual wear and skinny jeans and peach coloured converse. But then again, I suppose what I wear is not a huge deal now is it? This story I'm to tell you is something that I'm still awaiting an answer. No..not an answer, a new companion. Here...let me tell you.
It was what I had described, a warmed winter day as I walked down a grey, broken Stoney path. The trees laced with glittering frost an droplets of water slowly plopping to the ground, creating slippery situations. Hearing the faint echo of...trumpets not too far off I was stunned. Had the stories I heard been true? That the faint sound of trumpets playing in the woods every now and then singled out a...Ferret? No, that wasn't right. Not a ferret, that would be obscured. I scanned my brain on stories I had heard F...Fear....Faerre! Ah, that is what it was. Almost like a fox creature, but with beautifully designed pelts, each and every one unique. As I approached a large gate I laughed quietly to myself. I had been expecting just to see the marvellous town. Not expecting so much more to my eyes.
There in the center I saw altar...are was it a stage? The two have always got me the slightest bit confused. Shrugging it off I watched a Faerre already there. Mid speech...Hm, I wish I had caught her name. My dark brown gaze flittered over the young girl's fur. The dark purple seemed to glimmer and shine when the sun hit it just right. Tipping my head thoughtfully, half smiling to myself. I wondered why this one would want to leave, where she lived seemed to beautiful...so peaceful....but my thoughts were soon answered as the young one continued on with her speech.
"Try my challenge. Bring me a gem that'll woo my pretty little heart and eyes." Were the words I last heard her speak.
Seeing quite a line form for this lovely, I was slightly confused. Instead I walked around the town, enjoying the time I had left there for the day. Buying myself a steaming cup of hot chocolate and occasionally socializing with others around. I was fascinated by all the Faerres. Some running like mad, others with swords on their belt, and others just living and loving their daily lives. Just like the tales...I had thought to myself that evening. When I had made my way back to the altar thingy the Faerre was still there. By now the line had dwindled, and I wondered to myself why all the gems and stones presented has to be so 'out of this world'. I left that day, pondering it over.
The day I returned to the altar the Faerre sat there once more. The sun continuing to shine on her shimmering fur. A new line of different visitors had formed, and if have to admit it, I was slightly amused. But without second thoughts I had joined the line. Stepping onto the altar as it was my turn, slipping on the icy step. The gift I had been carrying for her flew from my pocket and landed almost like it was meant to happen at her paws. Sighing softly to myself, I simply lay on my stomach, like I had meant for that to happen. I fondly remember one halloween, when I was about four. It was icy that holiday, I couldn't make it three steps without slipping and falling. So I talked, I talked to this Faerre who's name I did not know.
"You have asked so many visitors to bring you a gem that captures your heart. And any have brought you shimmering, shining, beautiful gems to your hearts content." I paused my little speech, biting my tongue to not go off on a rant.
"But sometimes..It's the simplest things that can be the joy and wonders to a new world. What I have brought for you is simply that. An overlooked gem everyday. You may not be happy with that you see inside that small bag, but maybe one day, one day you'll learn that it was made thousands and thousands of years ago. It could have been left behind by a glacier, it could be the perfect skipping stone, it could be the finest gem in your collection, it could simply be...simple. I urge you to open the bag, but if you do not, then do not." I told her that. And that was it. That was all I said...nothing about me. I'm not sure why, but I simply wondered if this glitter catching Faerre could see beyond the trinkets of fine good or diamond.
Carefully getting to my feet, I half crawled down the Altar so not to fall. Simply making my way around the town again to enjoy what little time I had left until I had to go home. I wondered if she's open the little bag. For inside was a simply smooth grey stone. It's surface soft like silk, and a simple scratch of the nail would leave a mark. This my dear friend, was Soapstone.
---That could be carved into the most simple, or creative thing. The tales of this lovely place...They had never described the true beauty that can't be put into words. It's unique...extravagant...
Simple, wonderful. Historical, creative. It is Vinara.
