What is Christmas?

Rudolph opened his eyes, looking out at the snowy blanket that covered everything. His nose was buried in the snow, though it didn't cover it well, as there was a red glowing spot underneath the surface of the snow. He got up, looking around. His heavy antlers bowed his head low as he hoped no one saw his glowing nose.

Then the Cake Kitty spotted a bright yellow kitty and came closer. "Hello?" he called, flicking his tail, "what's your name? I'm Rudolph!" The other cake kitty turned and its orange eyes widened when it saw Rudolph. "What are you?" the yellow kitty asked. The reindeer-like Rudolph took a step or two closer. "I'm a cake kitty," he said, "I'm Rudolph. Who are you?"

The yellow cat sat down in the cold snow hesitantly. "I'm Lemon," she said, staring at him. "It's...interesting to meet you, Rudolph." The brown cake kitty grinned. "You too! ... Lemon." He smiled as he tried out the name. "Well, um, what now?" Lemon shrugged, inching away. "I think I'd better go...I'm not supposed be out this far...but I'll see you tomorrow." She bounded away, ears flat anxiously as she heard curious yowls ahead.

The next day, Rudolph followed the almost-gone pawprints of Lemon, which vanished halfway when the morning snow began. So Rudolph sat, confident that Lemon would come soon, and waited. He had to wait a long while before he caught a flash of yellow out of the corner of his eye. "Lemon!" he called, and the yellow patch zipping across his view paused. Rudolph made out the shape of a cake kitty. "Oh...it's you, Rudolph," Lemon said quietly, surprised that he was here again the next day. The brown kitty smiled and nodded. "Right. So, um, would you like to go ice skating?" he asked, shifting his paws hopefully.

Lemon sighed. "Sure. Let's go." So they went to the frozen lake, which was nearby. Rudolph began by stepping onto the ice, and his paws slid instantly. He found himself sliding across the lake on his belly. Lemon laughed, tail flicking back and forth. So she joined, gracefully sliding in swirls and loop-the-loops and spirals across the frozen layer of water.

After many hours, Lemon crawled onto the snowy bank, sighing. She was exhausted after all the slip-sliding. The brown cat followed, gazing up at the dark sky. He laid his head down on the snow, still smiling. Lemon glanced at him.

"Rudolph?"
"Yes?"
"I'd better go. It's late."
"Okay."
"But I'll see you tomorrow."

Rudolph nodded lazily as she scrambled up the steep hillside and out of view. That's okay, Rudolph thought to himself, she'll be back tomorrow.
