"Twins! Twins!" Mary dashed ahead of her older brother, Ryan, to the front. A girl in a red hoody glanced at her before writing in a notebook again. Mary beamed up at the Faerres, then turned. "Ryyyyyaaaaaan! Hurry, come see!"
"This is why 10 year olds like you can't go alone." He huffed, catching up. His eyes lightened when he saw the Faerres. He'd gone to visit them a lot, and after all the stories Mary had to come see! Mary had messy blond hair, which bounced with her as she squealed.
"They're so pretty! See Ryan?"
"Yes, I see." Her brother said tiredly. "Now hush up a little, would you? See, they might choose someone and-"
"Choose me, Faerre! Over here! I'll be real nice!" Ryan nudged her to be quiet.
"Mary! That's not how it works!" One of the Faerres peered at her over the edge, the blue one, eyes gentle.
"AWW! Look, he's watching me! Hello, I'm Mary!" Mary reached a ginger hand to pet it when Ryan snatched her back.
"I knew this was a bad idea, Mary. You promised you'd be quiet before we left." He reminded her. Mary frowned.
"Oh, right." She looked back up. "Do you think I'll get the blue one? Or the red one?" Ryan tried to hold patience.
"You might not get them, Mary." Mary crossed her arms.
"But I want them!"
"Yes, I know. But you have to be chosen, not to mention responsible."
"Don't you want them??" she pouted. Ryan smiled a little.
"Of course I do. But there's only so much we can give them."
"We can give them hugs." Mary said. "You could have the red, and I could have the blue."
"That's not what I mean." Ryan says, looking up. "And they have names."
"Ewel and Lewe." The girl beside them said. "The aqua one is Ewel."
"He's shiny." Mary murmured, eyes bright and glowing with admiration.
"Yes," The girl chirped. "I think he likes you, too."
"We could go on adventures together!" Mary squealed.
"Mary..." Ryan sighed. "We're not special. We don't have a lot of money. I don't think we should try."
"No! I want them!" Mary said stubbornly. The girl glanced at Ryan, looking pityful, then said,
"Your brother is right, many people want them. It's good, isn't it, that they'll find a home?"
"We'd be there home." Mary choked. "We'd be together forever." Then she went off to Ewel. Ryan smiled a sheepish thanks to the girl, and followed over, at Lewe. Lewe was quiet, and the crowd was small around him.
"Maybe you'll understand." He said quietly, kneeling to peer at it. "Having such a loud sibling. Sometimes I just can't stand it." Lewe put his head on his paws but seemed to watch him. "My name is Ryan. Our family doesn't have a lot, but we live in the country so it's nice and quiet. I even have a spot under the trees by a creek where we can just relax and think. You seem really smart, too. Don't let Ewel take you down, even if you are seperated your special." Ryan glanced back at the crowd around the other Faerre, people beaming and pointing, one his little sister who kept trying to get its attention. "I'd better go. I hope you find a good home, even if it's not ours." He held gaze for a moment, suddenly feeling very alone in understanding, and got up.
"Don't worry big brother, we'll both get them!" Mary chirped, bouncing up and down. Ryan smiled.
"Let's get home before Mum starts worrying." They started walking, Mary chatting endlessly but Ryan didn't seem to hear. He glanced back for a moment. He'll be safe. He told himself. Even if I'm not there...
