[Vision.]

Shadows on shadows
Depth to the night
Mirror to darkness
No light brings sight

A light stirring of the mist alerts you to the presence of...something. No shape not glimmer of light betrays exactly what that something is. How could you have gotten so lost in the few moments since you'd stepped off the path?

No moon shone through the trees. A light breeze stirs the branches above you, and the scent of fresh greenery reaches your nostrils. There! Was that a footstep? It was so light, but yet the forest floor-still covered in a light layer of last falls leaves-seemed to have emitted the slightest crunch. There it was again! A shape flickered in the darkness. Squinting, you can almost make out the outline of an animal.

"Who's there?" Whispers a voice. Hesitantly, not quite sure if you'd actually heard it, or if it had just been your mind playing tricks on you, you respond. There was someone there, for out of the mist steps a majestic doe. No wonder you couldn't see her, for as a cloud shifts from the moon, you can see that her dark coat is mottled, almost as if she was mist and shadow herself. Her eyes were dark, too. Her head swings around, trying to find you. She was blind.

"My name is Kurai," murmured the doe, gently touching her muzzle to your arm, shoulder and, finally, face. Her breath was sweet, soft, as she nuzzled your forehead. "My friend, you can see I am blind. My herd has abandoned me, I have no one. I can care for myself in the absence of predators, but I cannot run from those who would do me harm." Her majestic head bowed, reaching down to her slim legs, as she pawed gently at the leaf litter.

"Will you travel with me? I can help you back to the path-I have roamed these woods since I was but a fawn, I know every tree, if not by sight, but by smell and the sound of the forest around me." she offered, somehow managing, although her eyes were sightless, to seem to look deep into your soul, pleading.

You pause, unsure. Surely there was no harm in befriending this creature, and her offer of help seemed genuine. Who knows how long you could wander in these woods before finding your way out, and if she wanted to avoid predators, surely it would be wise to get away from here. As you are thinking, the moon disappeared once more behind a cloud, and the woods plunge once more into darkness. All you can see before you is the doe's face, framed by the mist which had hidden her, majestic and proud.

She moved like a shadow. Her coat blending with the surrounding trees. The creature moved silently. The only thing visible was her breath as it curled up in a line of mist. Nothing in the night provided the light needed to determine the animal. So with a heavy heart, my eyes close.

Upon awaking, I see nothing. Not a trace of the creature remained. Nothing. Searching the area left me blank. The creature had eluded my sights. A thought creeped into my mind. Was it a ghost I had seen? For the rest of the day, the idea latched itself onto my brain. Shaking it was impossible.

The sun was setting as I heard the leaves. Bathed in blood-red light, they rattled and crunched. My "sixth sense" tingled. Something was out there. And I had a strong feeling that it was the animal. Its short presence the night before had mystified me. What would tonight do to me?

Sitting on a stump, I fell into a frozen state. My heartbeat could not even be heard. In silence, the noises grew. Something scared me, which was rare. But tonight, a full moon shone down on the forest. When last night, there was not even a shimmer of light. Now, illuminated in the white light, she appeared.

The frame of the animal showed that of a deer. The absence of horns showed the gender being a doe. My eyes were wide as she came closer. Upon observing again, I could see that her coat was not completely black. Mixed in were reds, greens, and whites that blended like the Aurora Lights. They created a sort of spectrum, topped with ebony spots.

I couldn't help a muscle spasm as chills ran up my spine. She stood inches from me now. [color=#8000FF]"Why are you frightened?" said a voice. Only then did I see the doe's mouth move and manipulate her noises into words. "My life has been lonely in these past weeks. I was lost in my herd's migration," she continued, "I honestl don't mean any harm. In fact, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to take me with you."

My hands shook slightly. Did this beautiful creature really just ask me to be her companion? "Um,... I would be glad to have you come with me," I replied to her request. The doe approached and touched her nose to my cheek. "You can call me Ayita. It means 'dark beauty'," she said. Her breath smelled sweet and fresh. Its touch was warm and comforting.

Tenatively, I reach my arm up. Slowly, I rest it on her shoulders. Ayita's fur was soft to the touch, not a single trace of a course hair. It was then that I knew what had just happened. I had made a commitment to this doe. She was my friend, and I was her's. And this friendship would be eternal.
