There were four suitors pursuing Miyatake's hand but only one that she stumbled on finding a task for. The other three were easy; Takeshita got catching a mythical fish, Minamoto solving an unanswerable riddle, and Tamashiro finding a lever to move the world. But Nagasawa, who most desired to marry her, was trickier.
She needed to devise a favor that he could not complete but that would also humiliate him; something that would guarantee he would not return to her to try again.
She invited her suitors to receive their tasks and in the week before their arrival she stewed. It was only during her morning training with her katana that an idea struck her.
Nagasawa arrived first, as she had expected.
"Miyatake," he said, bowing as he took her hand at the door. "I heard you were asking favors of your suitors, to prove their worth."
"Nagasawa," she said sweetly. "Are you ready to begin?"
He rose and nodded. Miyatake grinned - the sudden violence in her expression startled him.
"You will be fighting me, one on one," she announced. "We may use katanas or fight hand-to-hand. I will let you decide."
Nagasawa stared at her. "...combat?"
"Yes." She smiled up at him and flashed her gold eyes. "Unless you would like to forfeit?"
"Of course not." Nagasawa studied her a moment and then nodded. "Lead on, Miyatake."
She bowed and led him into the house, nimbly tying her hair up as she walked. Nagasawa would expect this be an easy fight against a small girl; but Miyatake, who had dreamed of heroics for as long as she could remember, had outstripped even the best swordsmen her father could find. This fight would take less than an hour - Nagasawa would leave in deep shame and Miyatake would finally be free.

"...fine, Miyatake. You may ask each of your suitors to complete a task of your choosing."
Miyatake looked up at her father in surprise. His expression was pained. "This task can be anything you want but at the end of this foolishness, daughter, you must choose one."
Miyatake smiled and hid her glee behind a delicately fanned hand. "Thank you, father," she said demurely. "I will go and think on it now."
She was the only heir her father had and her mother had died many years past. Miyatake knew her father had pinned his hopes on her, that she might marry rich and pass their sprawling farms onto the perfect spouse but there was one problem - Miyatake did not wish to marry.
When she had first announced this to her parents her mother had laughed. They'd told her not to be silly. Miyatake had not understood it for the serious matter they believed it was and spent her adolescence daydreaming. She wanted to explore, to go on adventures, to become a hero and have a reputation of her own that was greater than the one she'd grown up with. She wanted to be more than her father's pretty daughter.
