Work ;; Svetlana stood in place, frozen. The neighborhood that she was in was fairly wealthy, as far as wealth went in this day and age, and there were people of all species and ages gathered around several of the houses. Only her tail moved, swishing back and forth and giving off a soft yellow glow. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the tiny face give a wink. It was to be her decision, then, which house she should go to. The young reaper--who had only died a few years ago--was worried that the line would take forever and that worst of all, she'd be shunned. In a universe of near-immortals, the "lucky" dead that walked among the living were often feared as a reminder that despite a long lifespan, death would take everyone eventually.

"Are you alright?" asked a gentle voice.

Svetlana turned to see a blue creature, something she had never seen before. It had the markings of a bird (A jay, she thought), pouches on its neck, hooves, and a strange substance that looked like jelly covering the belly and tail. Or was the strange substance its belly and tail? She suddenly realized that the other was waiting for an answer.

"Oh!" she said. "Uhh, I guess? What's your name? What're you doing here?"

The blue creature looked mildly amused. At least, she thought it--no, he; anything with that voice was a he--was. "I'm Avis," he said. "A Jelly Beast. At least, that's what they call us."

They? Svetlana was confused until she realized that Avis must have been one of the few of his kind to reach sapience, although judging by history, the rest of his kind would soon follow. Therefore, the "they" must refer to every non-Jelly Beast. "Well," she said, "my name is Svetlana."

"A pretty name," remarked Avis.

Svetlana blushed. "Thanks."

"Well, would you like to be my trick-or-treating partner? It's my first time."

Svetlana was surprised. Normally, no one would come near her but here was someone who was bold enough to ask for her company. "Sure! Why not?"

The night was cool, the wind making it seem chillier as it howled through the trees, tearing down leaves as it did so. Two little simas trailed behind their fathers, tails twitching and fur slightly on end in their slight fright. In front of them was a large house, with broken windows and the front door hanging only by one hinge. Onai, the elder twin, frowned as he thought of what it looked like. It looked like one of those creepy houses in scary movies. Were their fathers really going to run a haunted house for Halloween like they had talked about doing?

He shivered at the thought, wondering just how scary they might make it if they were renting this place through Halloween. He looked to his younger brother, Maui, whose four ears were laid back against the loud wind and the high-pitched creaking of the wood. "Are you okay?" he whispered. He knew his little brother spooked easily - having four ears meant he could hear more, and it was louder. That and Maui could sometimes be prone to nightmares after watching or reading something scary. A haunted house? That would be terrifying to his brother.

Maui nodded a little. "Yeah... I think so. You don't really think they're gonna run a haunted house, do you?" he asked nervously, tail flicking back and forth with his anxiety.

Onai sighed and looked at the house. "I think they are, Maui. And we're gonna have to help, I bet." He wrapped his tail around his brother comfortingly. "But the good thing is, if we set up all those spooks and scares, you'll know what to expect. So it won't be that scary for us," he promised.

Maui smiled shakily. "Thanks, Onai," he whispered.

Their fathers looked back at them from the porch of the house. "Well? Are you two coming?" Daddy Ace asked with a playful smirk.

Onai nodded and climbed the stairs with Maui close to his side. "Are you gonna do a haunted house, Daddy?" he asked of Milo.

He nodded. "Yeah, little wolf. We need to start setting it up. But since we're going to be spending a lot of time here in October we wanted you and Maui to get used to the house before we add all the scary stuff. So we're going to spend the night."

Maui's eyes widened and he started shaking. "St-stay the night? H-here?" he repeated with a small whimper.

Onai nuzzled his ears before Daddy Ace pulled Maui into an embrace. "It'll be okay, Maui," he assured him. "We've got a room all set up like we're on a camping trip, and the house isn't that scary once you walk through it. Do you want to do that first?"

Maui nodded, and Onai smiled slightly. "I think staying the night could be fun," he offered. "We can have smores, tell stories, and play games."

Daddy smiled. "Uncle Vokun and Uncle Krosis are supposed to be coming too, to help us set up a few of the decorations."

Onai and Maui grinned. They loved spending time with their Uncles. "Then what are we waiting for?" Onai asked. "We should see if they're here!"

He and Maui raced inside, checking every room for any sign of their Uncles. In one room they found a few feathers. "They're here already! We've gotta find them!" Onai announced to their fathers, he and Maui turning around in the doorway. Their fathers were grinning, and he tilted his head in confusion.

Then he and Maui were promptly pounced on, paws flying over their bellies, tickling them. They laughed wildly, trying to squirm away from their Uncles. "Mercy!" Maui cried out, and their uncles backed away.

"Are you excited for the pretend camping trip?" Uncle Vokun asked, a grin on his face and joy in his eyes.

The twins nodded, and Daddy laughed. "As soon as they heard you two were here they forgot all about needing to decorate the haunted house."

Uncle Krosis smirked. "Well, we'll just have to fix that. Haunted houses are the best part of Halloween!"

Onai and Maui shared a look. If Uncle Krosis liked haunted houses then they couldn't be too bad. Onai smiled. "Then what are we waiting for? Let's start making this place scary!"
