The sun’s rays brushed against Tex’s fur where she lounged in the long grass. She blinked lazily at the red and orange toned sky watching the sun sink gently below the hill. Her tail twitched from side to side as she debated whether or not she was going to get up while the sun was still setting, or if she would wait for the blackness of the night to set in. She was lying on her side and her wing was bent a bit in a not entirely pleasant position, but the effort to move wouldn’t be worth the removal of the discomfort. The sky darkened just a bit more as her stomach rumbled reminding her that it was necessity that would drive her to move if not her own desires.

As the last of the light leeched from the sky she rolled to her feet stretching her legs and wings as she stood. Realizing there was a shameful amount of dust on her wings she pulled them in close to her body and then snapped them out, dislodging most of the dust, the rest would just have to wait until she had a moment to wash. Slowly she exercised the muscles in her back as she opened up her wings and closed them slowly. She hasn’t used them all day and she knew it would be foolish to simply jump into the sky without any preparation.

Though Tex knew that she ought to be diurnal she had always had difficulty hunting during the day. Her dark fur stood out starkly against the yellow waving grass that hid those with the lighter fur. She was a dark spot in a realm of light and it bothered her that any prey that relied on sight could pick her out of the landscape and run before she was even close. Even the birds could spot her in the deep blue of the sky. So she hunted in the black of night where her wings were just another part of the blackness.

Tex needed to get moving while the bats she planned to hunt were still not far from their tree so she started loping across a fairly flat area of ground. As she increased her speed she held her wings out so the air coursed around them and when she put on the burst of speed that cheetahs are so famous for she was able to get the lift that she needed to become a part of the sky. As she flapped her wings to gain altitude her legs were tucked up as close to her body as she could get, it had surprised her how important that little detail made when flying. When she had been an older cub, just barely having grown her flight feathers, she hadn’t seen the point in tucking her legs up like her father instructed. She’d kept them up whenever he was watching, but when he turned his back she promptly let them hang down. It hadn’t been a total disaster mainly because she hadn’t been too far from the ground at the time. When she dropped her legs she found it very difficult to guide where she was going and the change had caused her, in her inexperience, to spiral quickly to the ground. So she kept her legs tucked up where they belonged during longer flights, especially when she was tired.

She coasted a bit as she neared the large tree, keeping her eyes peeled for the flying food or the other nocturnal predators that would fill her belly even more. Luck, as it seemed, was with her for the day as she spotted one of the larger owls that she had come across. Its dusky grey and brown coloration catching the moonlight as it dipped in and out of the small swarm of bats. Tex flexed her claws a bit as she flew higher to get a better angle. She had the advantage of weight and teeth, but the claws of the owl could not be underestimated. She had gotten scratched more than once because she had been overconfident.

Tex waited until the owl was just a bit below her and to the right before diving at it. Her teeth snapped shut on its head as her claws dug into its wings and body. She flapped desperately to slow her descent as the added weight and the owl’s struggles threatened to throw her off balance and out of the sky. Within moment the owl was dead and as she slowly winged towards the ground part of her wished she had someone to share it with. Not that one owl would be enough to feed even her; she would have to be in the skies again tonight if she wanted to sleep the day with a full belly. It would have been nice to have someone to share it with though. She’d been so sure that setting out on her own and leaving her family behind had been a good idea, but had it? She had been the black sheep who couldn’t keep properly hidden during the day and it had irked her enough that she had decided to just strike out on her own. Maybe it was time to go back and visit the family, Tex mused as she began eating. She discarded that idea almost immediately she hadn’t seen any of them in years, why should she bother them now. She was willing to bet at least one of them already had a family, a family she had never met. Talk about awkward. No she didn’t want to go see them, but she did want someone to talk to. Someone who understood why she hunted at night and maybe would even like to hunt with her. Her mother’s dark coat made it seem like she might understand, but Tex hadn’t been on speaking terms with her since she’d been a teen. Back when striking out on your own meant that you had no one to answer too, but that meant no one to depend on, or trust.

A soft raspy growl behind her made her realize that she had gotten a bit too involved in her musings. Grabbing what remained of the owl she whirled to face the danger and started backing up. She had ended up just a bit under the tree and she would need to get a running start if she wanted to fly away. She returned the growl as she analyzed the cheetah that was crouched behind her. Red eyes gleamed from a coat so close to black that it seemed to fade into the night. The slightly darker stripes mimicked the tall grass that swayed around them in the soft breeze, but what really caught her attention were the blood red stripes across the paws. Ear’s flattened against her head Tex growled debating whether she should fight or fly. The other cheetah paused and carefully perked it’s ears causing Tex to become confused.

“Aren’t you Aiveon’s little girl?” The cheetah asked relaxing her posture as she did so. “I haven’t seen you since you had fluff instead of feathers. How are you?”

Tex was trying to figure out what exactly was going on, but this cheetah tugged on her memory. Dropping the owl she replied carefully. “I’m fine. Who are you?” She let her stance relax minutely, but she was still willing to run.

“I’m Destry. Which you would know if your mother had brought you to visit like I told her to, but then again she has more important things to do and people to see. You’re Tex right? I remember your mother was so proud because you look so much like her, but you’ve got your father’s striking wings. Now then since you’re here you must stay and talk.”

Tex glanced down at her measly supper. “I’d love to, I really would, but I’ve got to go.” Yeah, go get more food. “So, maybe I’ll see you later.”

Destry’s tail twitched back and forth a bit. “Ah, you’re hunting, how inconsiderate of me. Would you like some company?”

“Yes, yes I would.”

So the two of them walked off to hunt together, both had been a little lonely, and now both could enjoy the company of family.

Grinz slowly stalked the plump field mouse as a evil grin lit up his face. The field mouse, completely oblivious, continued to nibble on a small piece of grain. Grinz tense and the mouse sensed him just as he sprung. “Hah!” he yowled got you!” “Alright, fine mumbled the field mouse, you got me. I guess I’m it.” He dropped to the ground and, lightly touched Grinz. “You’re it!” He shouted, cackling madly as he sprinted away. “What? No fair!” Grinz shouted back. But he was already running.

By RockehRawr:
Crack.
Songbird’s fur bristled as she heard the thunder crack loudly. She’d seen the lightning beforehand, but the thunder always managed to catch her by surprise. It fascinated her that thunder always followed lightning, never daring to go first. There were many stories the cheetahs told to explain that, but none of them really made sense to her. Besides, The Cave made her nervous. It was damp and smelly in here, and at night the only thing that lit up the seemingly eternal darkness was the flash of lightning.
What the cheetahs called The Cave was essentially a series of tunnels all intertwined to create a living space for the cheetahs in storms. It was probably man-made many years ago, but the time of man had long past, and now only a few humans remained. Some of the humans created special bonds with the cheetahs, visiting them often, (and only in good weather). She herself had a human, who called herself Dani. She visited her nearly every day, and even gave her a name. Dani had adopted a new cheetah, only a nameless egg at the moment, which she curled her tail tightly around to keep it warm and dry. Songbird wondered what she was to this egg. Sister, mother, friend? Nothing by blood, but some bonds go much deeper than that.
She wanted badly to stretch her wings, but there was no room in the crowded room. She had been one of the first cheetahs born here, but since then, many more have either traveled here from somewhere else, were born in litters of five.
She shifted her weight in an attempt to stretch, but all that it earned her was a glare from a previously sleeping cheetah next to her. She muttered an apology, eyes on her paws. Times like this made her want to fly. But the water would not only be uncomfortable, but would weigh down her wings and make it harder to fly. Flying freed her of her worries, if only for a moment. She couldn’t imagine herself, be herself, without her wings. Dani had told her that once no cheetahs had wings. Songbird, of course, didn’t believe her. How could it be true? Not all cheetahs had wings, of course, she was the only one in her litter, but many of the litters nowadays had at least one cub with wings. The new cub would probably have wings as well. Both of its parents had wings.
Songbird just barely heard the ringing of bells over the noise of the rain. It was the head caretaker, Tris. Tris was in charge of the entire cheetah colony. She had a few seconds-in-command, and all the cheetahs, with the exception of those whose bonds had been broken, had bonded with a human caretaker that sometimes took care of a few other cheetahs.
The bell ringing ceased, and Tris’s voice rang out over the cheetah’s heads. She told them to get a good night’s sleep, their food supply was running low and they needed to go hunting tomorrow. Songbird happily obliged.
---
Crack.
Songbird jumped. The thunder had awoken her. But there was something different about it. Crack. There it was again. That’s odd. It was quiet, not booming like thunder usually was. Crack. With a start, Songbird realized the egg was hatching! She panicked. What was she supposed to do? She nudged the cheetah next to her, the one that glared at her. He didn’t budge. She pushed him again, harder this time. Again, he didn’t move. He must have been a heavy sleeper.
Even more panicked now, she turned to the cheetah on her other side. She shook her with her paws. “Wake up, wake up!” she whisper-shouted.
The cheetah looked up groggily at her. “Wha-? We’re supposed to be sleep--”
“Yes, I know, but the egg! It’s hatching!”
The cheetah’s eyes widened in surprise. “I’ll get Kfira.” Kfira was the egg’s biological mother. Songbird was glad she was coming, she would know what to do.
The minutes passed like hours, but Kfira was finally there. “I’ll take it from here, you can go back to sleep.” Songbird tried, but she found herself focused on the egg hatching. First a paw, then a head! She was a brave one to stick her head out so early. Another paw, and then finally her entire body was back out! Songbird wondered if she would crawl back into her egg as some shy newborns would do. But this cub was brave and determined, she was clearly not crawling back into the confines of her shell. She stared at every cheetah present as if she were some great hero, whose great act of hatching demanded applause. Every look was a dare to try and force her back inside her eggshell cage. Songbird watched her with eyes the size of saucers the entire time.
More questions buzzed through her head. What would her name be? Would they get along? Will Dani like this newborn more? Curious questions were replaced by nervous, paranoid ones. She started to worry about the presence of this new cheetah. It might do more harm than good.
But even though questions and worries ran through her head, sleep overpowered them eventually, and Songbird dreamed of flying.
---
Songbird greeted the morning with sleepy eyes. She started to remember the event of the night before. She felt something soft on her side. She rolled over to look, and there was the cub! It woke up when she turned, and was now looking at her, no longer with a challenge in every glance, but unguarded love let loose by sleepiness. Songbird softened at the sight. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. Maybe the cracking of a hatching egg is a sound of comfort, instead of nervousness. Maybe the crack of thunder doesn’t start a storm, but it does start life.
