Long ramble ahead [im so sorry] wrote:Can be called the Moon Rabbit, Moon Hare, or Jade Rabbit; this colour in is based on the stories of the rabbit usually depicted within the moon itself, something mentioned in both East Asian and Indigenous American folklore.
This particular focus is on the Buddhist Jataka tales, where it is said that a monkey, an otter, a jackal and a rabbit came upon an old beggar sitting by a fire and asking for food; resolved to be charitable due to it being a night where the moon was full, the various animals split off in search of something to give.
The monkey gathered fruits from the trees, the otter? fish from the river, while the jackal brought back a lizard; the rabbit however - only really being able to gather up grass - instead offered up themselves for the beggar to eat, going so far as to even throw themselves into the fire.
Fortunately, the rabbit was unharmed and the old beggar revealed himself to the animals as Śakra, ruler of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. Touched by the virtue the rabbit showed, he drew the rabbits likeness within the moon itself for all to see.
In other versions of the story, usually dependent on culture significance; i.e. within the Japanese mythos, it is kind of the same, but instead of the rabbits likeness being drawn into the moon; they are actually taken to live amongst the gods on the moon, where he is seen pounding mochi.
Regardless of its folklore and origins, I find the story itself and the image of the rabbit on the moon beautiful and fascinating, and I hope i was able to capture that within the colour in!!
