eel and salamander are like brother and sister, always trailing each other like lost puppies. it's pretty funny to watch the two interact, playfully tugging at the opposite's mane, nipping coats, never a bad moment between them. but it never started out that way, not at all.
sal was never really a nice spirit, he was aggressive to any living thing that came near him or his paddock. he hated others, solitary confinement was needed for this stallion. he was known for brutally hurting other horses and biting humans. one fall morning, the humans had brought another tolter in, a mare, cream in color. she was beautiful, sal couldn't deny that, but when they placed her in the paddock next to him, all of those thoughts were flooded with anger. how dare they put her in his personal space like that? the grey stallion raced over to the fence, snapping his jaws at her, squealing with aggravation. the pretty little mare didn't even bat an eyelash at him, just continued to check out her surroundings before lowering her head to graze. this caught sal off guard, why was she ignoring him? how was she ignoring him? totally enraged the male screamed, bucking out at fence before trotting away, an agitated snort leaving his nostrils. she would know who he was, she would acknowledge his presence.
a few weeks later, the humans had the wonderful idea of putting the two on a hot walker together, one on the left, the other on the right. boring his stare right into the mare's cheek, he stomped around the walker unhappily, snorting and squealing. the mare seemed to ignore him, though she did have an amused look to her face. this just enraged the stallion, making him shout at her. "what's so funny, mare?" he hissed, venom lacing his words. the cream colored tolter just snorted, humor in her eyes. "stupid mare." he spat, mostly to himself. "i have a name, you know." sal squinted his eyes at her, as if he couldn't believe she was talking to him. "and why would i care?" he snorted, ears pinning back against his skull. "well, i just figured since you were dying to get my attention, you'd want to know my name." widening his eyes, the stallion gasped, "excuse me! i was not dying for your attention. you're just another ignorant mare, why should i care?" yanking his head back, he kept his icy gaze on the path in front of him, lashing his tail angrily against his haunches.
now, we all know that sal doesn't stay mean all of his life, and i'm here to tell you what happened to change him.
the crisp wind whipped back and forth, threatening to tear the trees right from their roots. sal was in his paddock, lazily stomping on the crunchy leaves underneath his hooves. suddenly grey smoke clouded the air, making him snap his head up. his purple eyes widened in fear as orange licks of flame started to consume the bright red barn that he had never been in. sensing danger, the stallion charged his paddock gate, trying to undo the loosely tied lead rope from the wooden posts. this just made it tighter as the gate lunged forward. soon, there was a flock of horses emerging from the barn, all squealing in panic, racing away from the flames. a few strangled cries came from the barn, as more tolters came barreling out of the barn. flames were getting closer now, sal could feel the heat as it swallowed up the barn and anyone inside. squealing in horror, the grey stallion rammed his body into the wooden post in attempt to break free. nothing, not even a splinter of wood; how did they make these things? sal was surrounded by smoke, his eyes burning. was this it for him? he scanned the perimeter, knowing very well that he couldn't jump the fence, he had tried before. screaming, he hoped someone, anyone, would have some ounce of kindness and save him from a painful demise. suddenly, a flash of cream danced across the fence, then disappeared. what was that? "come on!" a rich voice called, and he knew now who it was. why would she help him? shaking away the thoughts, the grey stallion raced out of the open gate, fire licking at his heels. he glanced over to the mare beside him briefly, admiring her kindness. he had been so cold to her, and she had saved his life. maybe others weren't so bad after all.
after reaching a good distance away from the burning farm, the stallion slowed, glancing around for the mare. he caught a flicker of her body, "w-wait!" sal cried out, hoping to get her to come back. the mare slowed and turned her body towards him, curious. "tha-." he stuttered, "thank you, uh.." "the name's eel." she smiled, "and you're welcome." she nodded before walking off once again.
ever since that moment, the two just grew closer. sal learned how to treat others nicer, and he showed her how to have more fun and break the rules, sometimes. the humans had to sell the horses because of the fire, but they chose to have sal and eel go together. they are always found together, and some think that sal has a thing for eel, but of course he always denies it.
