Venting
Marylin was sitting on her couch with her cat, Kiki, watching 'Cats 101'. Her parents had gone out to dinner for the night and had left Marylin alone. It was 10:30, and she was relaxing and enjoying the parent-less night.
After a little bit, she felt a tingling in her stomach. "Hey, Kiki, are you hungry?" Marylin asked the cat.
"Mow." answered the cat.
Marylin nodded. "Alright, let's go to the kitchen." she said. However, she remember she left Kiki's favorite treats by the back door, and went to go fetch them. It took her a while to locate the cat treats. When she got back, she fed the cat two treats and walked into the kitchen.
Marylin was slightly scared at what she saw. A couple of the cabinets were swung open, some things scattered around the floor and counters. Marylin frowned and cleaned up the mess, and popped herself popcorn and grabbed a Coke from the fridge.
About thirty minutes later, she felt the need to 'relieve' herself. "Hey, Kiki." Marylin said.
"Merrrow?" the cat asked.
"Do you need to pee?" Marylin asked.
"Mrrr." Kiki jumped off the couch.
"Bathroom closest to the stairs or closest to the attic?"
"Mrrah.""Alright, the one by the attic." But, Kiki was getting to be an older cat. Marylin remembered that there was a seldom used bathroom downstairs, and decided to go there.
When she sat down on the toilet, she heard a hard
'thmp' noise upstairs. "Boy, sure is loud up there..." Marylin thought out loud. But what would be there to make the noises? Kiki was right beside her...
Marylin stumbled out of the bathroom window, phone in one hand and Kiki in the other. She ran [clumsily] over to the neighbor's house. Marylin's parents were good friends with the neighbors, and when Marylin said she was scared and wanted to stay with them, they said it was fine.
Immediately, Marylin called 9-1-1. The police were over there quickly.
After about 30 minutes, Marylin's parents bust into the neighbor's house, their faces pale and their eyes big.
"Marylin..." her mother sobbed, wrapping her arms around her daughter in a tight hug. Kiki meowed.
Marylin looked at them, confused. "You don't know?" her father said, "There was a man in the attic... He was listening to you through the vent. He waited where you said you would be and checked around when you didn't come. After some time, he hid in the attic again... When the police showed up, he turned himself in, saying he was tired of hearing you venting."
"Oh, Marylin," her mother cried, "You almost died!"
Marylin looked out the window, scared to death.
