iv. "I just went for a run." (423 words)

The girl in front of him started shouting almost before he fully re-materialized.

"We have been looking all over for you! You were supposed to be at orientation an hour ago! You-"

He raised a hand to cut her off. "It cannot be that late. I was there for all of thirty minutes!"

"It has been three hours since you were reported missing. Where were you? We have talked about this!"

"I just went for a run. In Seyvis. You don't have to freak out so much, Kenia!" He waved his hand at the shimmering portal behind him, and it disappeared with a pop.

"Just a run? In Seyvis? You better not have left the portal open the whole time again, Ayulin."

"Well, I thought I would be back soon! I did not want to waste so much energy doing that!"

"You are such an idiot. Such an idiot." Kenia began pacing around the old warehouse, frowning and occasionally shooting a glare at him. "We have been over this! You have no idea what may have come through! Seyvin look almost exactly like us. How will we ever find them and return them? No one from the other dimensions should know the secrets of the Kozui. You need to stop visiting other dimensions all the time. What if you get stranded? What if you get killed?"

"What is the point of having this power if we are not supposed to use it?"

"We were given it to use it responsibly! Because of one trip to Seyvis, you may have put thousands of dimensions in danger!"

Ayulin snorted. "I hid the portal well. No one would have found it. If you're so concerned about this, why don't you go look for some Seyvin?"

Kenia's frown intensified and she glowered at him. "Alright, then. I suppose we will not punish you too harshly this time. This is your last warning. If you do it again, I can get them to take it away from you indefinitely. You must ask for permission every time you want to go. There is more at stake here than you realize." She paused for a minute, and then added, "You have missed a lot. We will send you the rule book tomorrow. We will be less lenient if you break a rule, because you could not bother to come to orientation. I suggest that you read it in its entirety. I have matters to attend to." She closed the door on her way out, leaving Ayulin in complete darkness.

Paper Airplanes-1

Postby peachycupcake525 » Sat May 12, 2018 1:30 pm

(302 words)
Paper airplanes.

She was five and he was six. It sailed over and struck him in the stomach. Her apology, broken up by childish giggles. Paper, folded and sticky from her hands.

She was six and he was seven. In its wings, it caressed his crude pencil sketch. Her eyes lit up when she opened it. She flung her arms around him and squeezed.

She was seven and he was eight. He missed his throw. It soaked up the early-morning dew. Her fingers pushed through it. The inked message was smudged.

She was eight and he was nine. It slid discreetly through his door. His mother unfolded it like a delicate flower. He could read it despite his headache.

She was nine and he was ten. He slipped it into her bag as they walked to school. She did the same the next day.

She was ten and he was eleven. They slipped from each other. He forgot it all. But she did not.

She was eleven and he was twelve. Fights happened weekly. He stopped speaking to her. Paper airplanes left with their bond. But she kept them all.

She was thirty-four and he was thirty-five. He found it unforgivable. He shut her out of his life, but he could never wipe her sorrowful face from his mind. He grew jaded and cynical, all alone.

She was forty-four and he was forty-five. It came to him in the mail: an apology on a paper airplane. Each day came another. Each day he put them aside. Until he received their childhood messages. He wept. The next day saw him sending an airplane of forgiveness. When they saw each other for the first time in ten years, they flew to each other and embraced. He was no longer alone. He had his sister.
