I can't believe that I'm actually about to do this, he thought to himself in slight horror and complete and utter disbelief. "Why on earth did I agree to do this again?"
Oh, right. It was Amanda Lynn who was the reason for why he was doing this. All the reason he needed to convince himself to do it really.
He went over to his closet and got out the costume that he had had for forever, slipped it on, took a deep breath and looked in the mirror. It wasn't like he didn't know what he looked like in it, but he wanted to see if he could pull it off and still look…attractive/handsome while wearing it. He frowned slightly as he gazed at his reflection in the mirror; he wasn't sure he could or would look handsome in any girls’ eyes while wearing his costume wings.
For the first time in a several years, his mind was flooded with the haunting voices of beans that had taunted, made fun of, bullied, criticized, and otherwise been mean to him because of his wings. They echoed around in his mind as he stared at his reflection in the mirror.
You’re such a weirdo.
Dude, you’ll never get any girls if you keep running around in that outfit Toothless.
Is this a joke? You think I’d want to take a picture for Prom with a guy as my date who’ll be wearing his costume wings over his tux?
The last one had always been a killing blow to his heart, was the one that haunted him more than the others. It was during high school and he had managed to summon up the bravery to ask the girl he had a crush on if she’d go to Prom with him, to his horror, she not only rejected him, but she had also rejected him in what was quite honestly the meanest way possible. Like it wasn't a big enough shot to his heart that she had rejected him, she had to go and tear him down as well.
He closed his eyes for a heartbeat and then opened them up, looking at the mirror with new confidence.
Amanda Lynn’s not like her, she’s not like any of them, she actually wants to see me in my costume, he told himself, trying to build his confidence back up. Still, the fear of rejection still loomed over his heart and he couldn't help but pray that she wouldn't make fun of him.
