Injured (1)
(Based off of my own characters from a book I am writing)

"AHH!" The scream pierced my ears from a short distance away. I knew it had been a stupid idea to split up. I tried to tell them, but apparently my words meant nothing. In the process of searching for a place to camp out for the night, the three of us had split up in an attempt to cover more ground. It had been a dumb idea from the start, and now someone had gotten hurt. With a nervous glance around the clearing I had found, I raced off in the direction of the scream.

Branches pulled at my hair, and tree roots attempted to cause me to fall flat on my face. But I speedily navigated around them and emerged with only a few cuts and scratches. I reached a clearing surrounded by a ring of bushes, and Spencer was laying in the middle. I found myself relieved it wasn't Jason, then immediately felt guilty for brushing off Spencer. He may be annoying and cracks stupid jokes, but I still care about him. Just don't tell him I said that...

Hoping it wasn't as bad as I anticipated, I rushed up to him, and upon closer inspection, found my fears to be confirmed. He was badly injured. A bleeding cut spanned the length of his lanky leg. It was deep. And not only that, but his foot was sticking out in an odd direction that no foot should. The dirt around his right led was stained red, and I wondered if it would ever fade. Spencer lay breathing heavily on the ground, his eyes staring up at the sky. I noticed they were fearful, and realized I had never seen him show true fear before. He always let things roll off his back and made the best out of every situation. It pained me to see him in this state.

Spencer hadn't seemed to notice me yet, and if he had, he didn't bother showing it. He just stared up at the sky. Only his just moved, heaving up and down in short, sharp breaths. I sat there for a minute in pure fear, afraid to do anything. I was worried that if I touched him, he might shatter. "Spencer?" I asked slowly and softly.

He didn't answer. He just kept looking upwards through the trees and at the darkened sky. I said his name again, anxiety working its way into my voice. "Spencer." Where was Jason when you needed him? I couldn't deal with this by myself.

After what seemed like forever, an endless void filled with the sound of Spencer's breathing, he spoke. "Reagan." My name. He didn't look at me. Not even the slightest movement. But he had spoken.

"What happened?" I asked frantically. "Your leg, it's...its..." I couldn't bring myself to tell him. It was broken for sure. Or his ankle at the very least. But the cut was deep. He wouldn't be able to walk for ages. And the odd angle his foot was twisted towards...I held back vomit for Spencer's sake.

"I don't know. I was walking, and suddenly, I was down here..." He wasn't making any sense. "I have no idea what happened. I can't, I'm sorry."

I shook my head. "It doesn't matter. We need to get you-" suddenly I gasped and clapped a hand over my mouth. My eyes had wandered towards his right side. His jacket was soaked with blood. His entire right side, right near the bottom of his rib cage. In the dim light I hadn't seen it at first. Now I understood. The leg was terrible, but it wasn't the main source of his pain. I needed to inspect the injury, but something was holding me back. It was terrifying.

Spencer's voice sounded again, and I turned to look at him. "Am-am I going to be okay?" My heart ached for him. Looking at his face, I could tell he was trying to be brave, but the fear in his eyes was prominent. I wanted to tell him it was okay, I wanted to so badly, but I couldn't lie to him. Truth was, I didn't know how this would end. My silence must have told the answer, because he shut his eyes tight in fear.

My next words were filled with worry. "I-I need to look at your injury." I stared at the red-soaked spot. "In your side." He didn't open his eyes, but gave a very small nod.

As gently as I could, I began to remove his jacket. Every time I started to pull off the sleeve, he winced and squeezed his eyes tighter. After a long, painful few minutes, I finally got the sleeve off and brushed it aside. The right flap of the jacket slid off his side, leaving only his shirt. I couldn't believe I was about to do this, but Spencer's life was at stake. Very carefully, I pushed his shirt up towards his chest. Spencer stifled a moan, and now it was clear why. I won't go into detail, but let's just say there was a very large gash in his right side. I wanted to look away, but knew I couldn't. The injury needed to be assessed, and this was the only way. It wasn't until the bushes to my left rustled that my gaze was pulled away.

Jason crashed through the bushes, leaves sticking out of his blonde hair. "Wonderful if you to show up." Bitterness crept into my voice, and I quickly regretted it.

"I'm sorry, I got a little lost. Then I heard a scream and-" he stopped short and stared wide-eyed at Spencer. "What happened?"

"I don't know. But we need to clean him up and bandage this, and..." I trailed off, knowing Jason understood. He hurried over and knelt in the other side of Spencer.

"Don't worry buddy, everything's going to be fine."
