Story:
I remember my first confirmation round as if it were yesterday...though it was relatively recent. My master was also my trainer and despite the reserve of some Nannucks before a show, she let me sit in her lap during the car ride there. I was nervous and I could sense hers too as she hesitated slightly between petting strokes. This wasn't the big leagues but I knew I had to do my best. Even if it made her a little more at ease.
When we got to the showing complex, I stood by my lady human's side while we registered, waited and finally when she helped with my grooming. Pesky things, I mentally chastised and made the occasional snapping at the combs while they groomed my coat.
"Impy, come on now. It'll all be over before you know it."
My lady human cooed as she finished up with my physical presentation. After looking at myself in the mirror, my nerves began to set in. What if I don't make it? What if I do something stupid to disappoint her? Will she still want me if I do poorly? Feeling overcome with these nerves, I emitted a small whine and looked up at her. When she looked down at me, all I saw was love and pride.
"Imp, you're going to do just fine. It's your first one, enjoy it. We can worry about all the technical stuff later. For now, relax and have fun. I'll be here with snacks once you're done."
The prospects of love and snacks made everything seem much better. With a quick lick, I set off for the show ring and waited quietly for my class and number to be called. When they called out a slew of numbers and finally my own, I bounded out into the light with the most sleekness and poise I could muster up. I waited patiently in stance while the judges inspected other Nannucks and contained my excited nervousness when they gestured for me to go onto the block. I held my body in position and they eyeballed my coat and physical makeup and I relaxed when they lifted my paws and checked my teeth. When I went back to my spot to await my score, I felt the nerves creep up again but I thought of love and snacks and mashed those feelings away. I was confident in myself.
The second place spot, with a score of 22 points, goes to 142: Shadowlands' Imperial Wonder!"
If a Nannuck could drop his jaw, I certainly would have. The applause around me was what jump started me back into the present while I walked up and took my place on the podium. I accepted my ribbon with the most poise and pride I could muster; a second place in my first show. I exited elegantly while being watched but behind the curtain, I bounded and curled up happily in my lady human's outstretched arms.
You did it Imp, and I couldn't be more proud."
