Finned otters were created as a scientific experiment: Project River Wolf. The goal was to create a species that could be used to guard bodies of water in the same way people have guard dogs. This resulted in a species of otter that was physically similar to a sea otter, but had much of the mentality of a giant otter and was larger than both. Due to the variety of genes used they developed abnormalities including horns on males, razor-sharp dorsal fins, and odd pelt colours. The project was deemed a failure as the species retained their fun-loving spirit and ultimately failed in their guardian role.

my random school doodles. i just wanted to point how how much i've been thinking about her, because she's been all over my work. i have more, but these are just a few. c:

girl azurine. it fits her perfectly,
wouldn't you say? azurine is a french name
for girls, meaning "sky-blue." her azure fins and
eyes are just the perfect colour, and need to be
reflected by the perfect name.

personality;;
clever
oh yes indeed, azurine is clever.
one of her absolute favourite
activities is solving puzzles and
riddles. she has the uncanny
ability to swiftly assess a situation, as well
as seeing and taking easy advantages.
however, her cleverness has given her a
sense of arrogance. not
to the point where it's offensive or
unbearable, but her friends
definitely know she thinks
rather highly of herself. regardless,
she is still kind and (almost) modest.

glamourous
azurine has an air of fascination
about her. she is fabulous. she
always has her fur in pristine condition,
her whiskers never bent, and her
fins always gleaming. she has a need
for attention, and sometimes it's
not a very good thing. she gets jealous quite
easily, but never really shows it. azurine, though,
is very self-conscious. social status and other's
opinions of her mean quite a bit, so she ended up
with general social anxiety.

kind
what is most upsetting to azurine is the fact that
many others see her as shallow. in truth, she is extremely
generous and kind. she greatly appreciates the company of
others, but many a time, others are a bit hesitant to visit
with her because of her shallow reputation.

Zafaria loves the snow! She could play in it all day if she could. She also loves anything cold, especially snow and ice. Oh how she loves the cold. Her favorite season is of course, you guessed it, Winter! And though she likes Winter, she adores the time when flowers pop up through the snow. Right when spring time is starting, the early flowers pop up through the snow and surround her pool.
Dislikes
She doesn't like anything hot. So this means that she dislikes Summer, especially. It is the exact opposite of Winter. She also doesn't like rain. Yes, it is kind of like snow, but it is heavy and gets in her eyes. Beaches also contradict what she likes. The are hot and the air is sticky. The water is way too warm and she doesn't like the constant waves.
Her Home:
Zafaria lives at the bottom of cold, snowy mountains in an exceptionally large pool, fed by a river. It is surrounded by evergreen trees, hidden from predators. During the early spring, there is hundreds of red flowers that pop up through the snow. She has never figured it out why the pool has not frozen over. Though it is large and deep, and it is completely still water, the water remains unfrozen. The pool goes up to 35 feet deep, and 3/4 football fields long and wide.
Personality:
Zafaria is very nice. She would help anyone in need, no matter what. Whenever she sees someone that needs help, she automatically remembers her own past, and how Spot helped her when no one else would. (Read the history to know who Spot is). She is also always looking for a good time. Anytime it snows, she jumps and plays until she can't anymore. And even in the summer, she finds fun by chasing squirrels and finding shapes in the clouds.
Quirks:
Zafaria is very forgetful. She would make a list in her mind of what she needs to do that day, then as she starts to forget the first item on the list before she is even done! She also has to take the eyes out of the fish before she eats it. They creep her out as she is eating it. It is like the fish is staring at her and wondering why she would eat a poor fish. She has a spoon-like stick she uses with her mouth.
Family:
Zafaria is an orphan. Her parents got murdered when she was 4 months old by poachers.
History:
At four months old, Zafaria's parents died. A few days after, when she was weak and hungry, another otter, named Spot found her and took care of her until she was old enough to live on her own. She fled the place where her parents died so she wouldn't have to wake up to that horrible memory every night. She followed a river for a few weeks until she got to a nice, hidden pool, with plenty of food and shelter.
The Stranger(Story time!):
It was a few days after her parents died. Zafaria was barely alive. She found a few crawfish here and there, but not enough to keep her alive for long. She hid from anything that moved that was too big for her to eat. One day, she was going to the shallows to look under rocks for some food when she saw another otter, an older one, fishing. She turned around, frightened, and started to run away. As she was running away though, she tripped and fell, twisting her paw. She was too tired and weak to get up, even if her paw wasn't hurt. The older otter jerked her head up in surprise, not knowing anyone else was there. The older otter ran towards Zafaria, seeing that she was too young to be on her own and obviously hurt. The other otter, named Spot as Zafaria soon found out, offered to help her. Apparently, Spot had recently lost her daughter to a disease. Zafaria reminded Spot of her own daughter, so Spot took her "under her wing" and nurtured her to health. She took care of Zafaria until she was old enough to go off on her own. Zafaria never forgot her.

Snowpea was born into a very poor family,
with only her mum.
Her father ran away because he wanted nothing,
to do with her.
Soon she was very lonly,
she never mixed in with other otters.
She was very sad like this but kept hopeing.
Eventully in her teens Snowpea turned a side,
and became a very cheeky otter.
She never listened to her mum,
friends,or other family.
She would go out at might and come on the next day,
not telling anyone where she was.
She knocked out of this stage when she was turing into a adult,
and learned it was wrong.
Even today she has a bit of a cheeky side,
still has little friends from when she was little.
Also she loves he mum and felt stupid she dident realize earlir.

Famiy: Is in a litter of Three and is the youngest. It is kind of hard for her because everyone, even her brothers used to tease her because of her strange coloring and extra thick fur. Used to... For they were gone now taken by the hunters...
Short Story:
White. White then black then silence. This year it was different. The snow was going out of controle as it streamed in front of my eyes. I had always been a very small female even as a cub building snow dens. But this was not joyful little play, this was fear. The snow was starting to get heavy as it just kept piling up and up. It was starting to get cold. The cold that would normaly invite me in, was driving me out. What had I ever done to deserve this? I thought. White. White then black then silence. My life seamed like it was about to go. Then the light faded.
Thump. Thump,thump... The sound of snow being shoved aside was evident. The single black paw thrust straight out of the gound then clawing at the earth. I pulled her self out, but as I started to I shake I realized I was being watched. Mabye about ten feet away I saw a big black finned otter. This male had large menacing silver horns with eyes as clear and blue as the my river. I bared my teeth and crouched as low to the ground as I could get.. But this male seemed different, kind and thoughtful. He lay down and with head on paws. Watching. I knew that I didn't know him and submission was definitely not a good idea. But as soon as I saw him lay down I realized how tired I was, and I colapsed. It was almost as if he could read the fear and exhaustion in my eyes. He started to walk over. But then I tenced. So he seemed to stop and think about what he was doing, then trudged on. As soon as he was right next to me he let out a little grunt and lay down. He was as big as they get, being able to curl around me as if she where a pup. I suddenly felt warmer. he also had the thick, thick fur. At first I wanted to resist, but I was just to tired so I gave in, curled up and fell asleep in his warmth.

That is how I met your father... I said as my pups all gathered round listening for more.
