Short Story:
It was a crisp Autumn day in Eldemore. The sun was shining bright, yet there was a chill in the air that would dig deep into your bones, even with a sweater. The trees were loosing there leaves, and the cold wind would come by and sweep them away, sending them on a swirling journey to who knows where. As you walked, you heard and felt the colorful Autumn leaves crunching under your feet, making it imposable to walk silently. In the usually quiet woods, it was if some magical hand had reached down, plugging in the power of the forest. You could see numerous breeds of runes darting here and there, preparing for the cold weather in which the dark nights and sudden gusts of wind would bring. Every once in a while, if you were very observant, you could hear the growl of a rare, lone Leone, or a pack of hunting Dire Wolves, watching you from some hidden place, although you could never see them. It was on this day, that I met my first Elkrin, and became the newest Elkrin Rider, even if the guy is still a baby. I was walking through the woods, wearing the worst possible choice of clothes. I was wearing grey shorts, thin ones at that, a white tank top, only coming down to my belly button, and a moss green, button up sweater. You could easily see how grubby I looked, my clothes dirty and torn, and my skin scuffed and scratched. I didn't care, however, and I felt like clothes meant the least compared to how one acted. Shivering, I pulled my sweater closed, letting the skin on my arms get exposed more. I was looking for what I had heard the night before. You see, the night before this one, while lying in bed, I heard the sounds of runes, drakes, ancients, and normal alike, Elkrins, Leones, and Dire Wolves. It sounded like the poor creatures were in stress, and calling for help. Just as I was about to give up my search, I came to a clearing. The clearing should have been happy, but there were cages, of all shapes and sizes lined up. I gasped, my hand dropping the sweater and flying up to cover my mouth. It was one of those illegal circus things! I quietly creeped into the clearing, weaving in and out of cages. I went to help many of the animals, but all of them seemed to be aggressive beyond belief. I couldn't risk getting mauled, so I continued on, making a map in my mind. I was going to tell the police about this, as soon as I got back. I continued on, my eyes meeting those of the frightened, stressed animals that were in the cages. Just as I got to a fierce looking Dire Wolf, my heart skipped a beat. “No! They can't have babies here! That's just to much!” I exclaimed out loud. For, to my purest horror, in between the cages of a Dire Wolf and a Leone, was the most beautiful, white, royal, Elkrin. He was just a baby, looking no more then a few months old. My brown, confused eyes met his blue, stressed ones, and I felt myself relaxing. In his eyes was all the knowledge of the world, and such an understanding, that it was clear he had lived many lives before being reborn into this one. I was just about to talk to him, when I heard feet, thumping and crunching on the frozen, leaf covered ground. It seemed my exclamation had alerted the owner. I turned and ran. The baby Elkrin stood up and made a low, crying, desperate sound as I left, and I knew he was calling for me to come back and help him out of his prison. My heart ached as I left him, and I knew he was the one for me. In that brief moment when our eyes had connected, we had formed a bond like no other, and we had been connected for life. Just as I heard the owner shooting at me, I reached the cover of the trees. I ran back to my house as fast as I could, and dialed the sheriff’s number. Later that day, under the cover of night, I returned with the sheriff to that horrible place. He instructed me to unlock all the cages, while he took care of the owner. I did as told, and soon the place was crazier then a bee hive being bothered. There where animals everywhere! I tried to keep track of the baby royal Elkrin, however in all the chaos, I couldn't. He was lost to my eyes in the mob of confused animals, and I had no choice but to move on. I had lost my best friend, my world. The sheriff came out of a little tent with the owner hand cuffed. I followed him to the police station, although my mind had stayed at the circus with that little Elkrin. I went back that evening, and my feet led me to his cage. His cage was empty and trampled, in fact, the entire clearing was. All the grass had been pressed down, and there was shattered objects everywhere. I heard the snap of the branch behind me, and I turned, afraid of what I would see. It was nothing bad, however, as looking back at me was the little Elkrin. “Scuba!” I yelled, “You're ok!” I don't know why I called him Scubba, but he responded, bounding over to me, and we started jumping and prancing. I played with him for what felt like no more then a few seconds however, before I saw a large, painful looking cut going in between his legs. I took him to the Eldmore vet, who said that he would be fine, but would never be able to breed. I set out to find his real Elkrin family, and soon did. Well, that is, I found his twin sister. It was amazing to see them together. Well, I suppose it all turned out ok, after all. All the animals were safe, Scuba got reunited with his sister, and I became my dream, an Elkrin Rider.
