Vulpes volux
Volux are a species of fox whose DNA structure is highly flexible; in domesticated populations alone, characteristics ranging from multiple tails to avian wings can be found in abundance. The identifying features of a volux are thus limited to the distinct mane of fur around the chest, and the vulpine face. While certain traits appear to be less common than others, new and even unique ones are always being discovered. This unusually frequent occurrence of significant benign mutations, often non-mammalian in nature, makes the species the focus of many researchers.
At around 40-60cm in height, and 4-7kg in weight, volux are typically restricted to a diet of small mammals, fish, insects, and, occasionally, fruit. The range of traits allows this species to survive in a variety of habitats, including tundras, deserts, moors, and semi-aquatic environments. As new populations are found, new traits are uncovered.
The species is sociable and rarely aggressive, making them perfect for families and individuals alike. In the wild, they live in small communities, or sometimes family units, with kits raised by every member of the group. They typically are solitary while hunting, but play and groom in order to maintain social bonds. Populations have been observed as both nocturnal and diurnal, depending on their habitat.
Litters typically range from 1-3 kits in size, though larger numbers have been documented. An interesting observation is that of hidden traits: a variety of recessive genes, which are not shown by the volux which carry them. However, each volux carries only one hidden trait. As such, pairing two individuals with the same hidden trait will result in the appearance of that trait in at least one of the kits.
Unique and rare characteristics are found most often through breeding, where they have a substantial chance of inheritance. Humans have found a range of unusual items which are able to purposely manipulate kits' genetics.
It is thought to be due to the instability of the species' genome that the presence of a certain "aura" is required for breeding; this energy is found in breeding orbs, which combine the post-meiotic DNA from the parents. Because of this, parents can be of any gender. In rare instances, the genes of more than two volux have been combined to produce a litter; this appears to require another kind of energy which is only available to the public in special events.
While standard volux traits may be completely unique between individuals, with fur or ear variations ranging in both appearance and extremity, these characteristics can only be inherited by kits if at least one parent physically demonstrates them.
In contrast, hidden traits, with one carried by every volux, will always appear the same way once inherited by offspring. It is not necessary for either parent to show the trait; if both carry the same unique gene, then at least one kit is guaranteed to display the characteristic. However, when physically present on a volux, they can be inherited just like any regular trait. Due to this, a volux will never carry a hidden trait that it shows.
