writing prompt - day 2
Kai nervously slipped the note into the mail tray. He’d written her name on the envelope in his best handwriting – which was still pretty messy – and the loopy letters stared up at him, pink and glittery and blindingly obvious. He’d found one of her glitter gel pens lying around and, owning no suitable pens himself, was forced to use it. He could only hope that she wouldn’t recognize it.
The sound of her footsteps, soft and delicate as they were, set Kai on edge. He busied himself with the mail, grabbing a letter from the pile at random. It was a toy catalogue, but Kai glued his eyes to it like it was the most interesting novel in the world.
If she found that weird, he wouldn’t know; he forced himself to keep his gaze firmly locked on the life-sized rainbow unicorn being advertised for a low $199. He could hear her humming, her annoying, beautiful humming, as she rustled through the mail. He felt like a criminal about to be caught, standing there as she searched for the evidence. Had she even noticed him? He knew how absent-minded she could be; it wouldn’t surprise him if she’d breezed right past him, ignoring him completely. The thought made him feel relieved and disappointed all at once.
Her humming ceased. She’d found it. Kai could feel the tension like a bomb about to explode. He shut his eyes, wincing internally as he envisioned her reading the words he’d written, those sappy, cliché, lovesick words…
A squeak from her broke through his final defenses, and he put down the magazine. Immediately his eyes flew to her. She was looking down at the poem – his poem – with a giddy smile on her face and a faint red blush staining her cheeks. Her eyes shone with happiness, excitement, and a thousand other emotions he couldn’t decipher.
‘What’s that?’ he asked, trying and failing to sound nonchalant.
‘It’s… it’s a love poem, Kai!’ In her elation, she hadn’t noticed his tone. He hoped.
‘Who’s it from, I wonder?’ She clutched the paper to her chest, a scene straight out of the romance movies she was always watching.
Kai didn’t get a chance to reply. She plowed straight on through her daydreams. ‘Maybe… maybe it’s… yes, he was so nice to me the other day… and he’s incredibly artistic too, he’s showed me.. yes! It’s got to be Barry!’
Kai made a sound that was part choke and part whimper.
She looked at him weirdly. She’d finally noticed his more than odd behavior. ‘Is anything wrong, Kai?’
There. She’d given him the perfect chance to admit that he was the poet. But... he still couldn’t do it. He was still the coward he’d always been. ‘Nope.’ He managed to squawk out. ‘I… I just realized how right you are.’
The excuse was feeble, and even she, the gullible one, knew it. Her gaze held for a moment longer. It felt like a lifetime to Kai. Surely, surely, his game was up.
Then she shrugged and turned her smile back on like a lightbulb. ‘I must go talk to Barry! Right now!’ she announced.
Oh, no. ‘Uh, I really don’t think you should-‘
It was too late. She was already out of the room. She called back as she left, cutting his words off. ‘He is my one true looooove!’
Yes, she’d just said that. And yes, it was probably just the soap operas getting to her head. Probably just her idea of a joke.
But Kai’s heart cracked a little anyway.
