Using
Haiti for this one since she rarely gets any attention
Through the quiet of their apartment, the hardest part of the day has begun. Leaving her bed.
Haiti watches with squinted eyes as the sunlight gleams from the window and huffs in contempt. She nestles into the warm body beside her, her wife and mate,
Ophelia from where the two lay cuddled in blakets and sighs. She knows she should get up, her son and daughter with be coming home today. The thought makes her smile softly. Her grandchildren as well. She yawns softly but curls closer to Ophelia anyway. But her children know the deal by now, she won't leave this bed unless she has to.
It's only when she feels Ophelia shift that she knows with dread that she has to get up. Her mate isn't the most graceful at waking up and rather than get lobbed in the face by a fist gone awry she'd rather keep her teeth. Despite her tiredness however as she slowly rises from the bed, she smiles warmly all the same.
With kalontine's day approaching rather swiftly, the surly kalon checks on her gifts. There's one for each member of the family, something important to Haiti. Despite what many said about her she was not without a heart.
'Obviously,' she thought with a snort as she looked through each one carefully.
Carefully wrapped was a gift from her distant family back in Africa. Each one telling a certain history or story to go along with it. It was something that had been passed down through her life for years. Each gift was completely had crafted, hand woven, glassblown, sanded. Back when her parents had been alive they too were craftsmen. She remembered her father teaching her how to sand down wood and spin thread. In America it was very different. That was done for you, but as Haiti observed further the longer she was in America, she still preferred to do certain projects without the help. Hence why she created her own gifts for her family.
For
Stromae she'd created a doll, seeing as he played more with those than Avian as a child. The doll was made from dark thread and had hearts sewn into the middle in an intricate pattered that alternated from purple to white. The buttons on the eyes were deep purple, just like his. She'd been sure to get them. In the middle of it was a jewel, Amethyst.
For
Avian it was hard to be as creative, but she thinks she might have done the job just fine. Seeing as her daughter was the more secretive of the two, though not so much that Haiti didn't know what she was doing at her....occupation, she decided an heirloom was appropriate. One that she hoped her daughter could appreciate. It was also more dangerous than the others and so she kept it in a box to be opened for later. A simple but masterfully crafted dagger. She would admit it was harder to find, but it had belonged for her father and his father before him. She hoped it would aid Avian in being safe more than in harming others. In the middle of the hilt was a rainbow opal.
The kits Avian had were more than a surprise and unfortunately with how....'busy' her daughter had been she had yet to truely meet them, but she crafted something for them anyway. Young Lionel she had decided would get this lovely neckalce of black beads and jade which had a peculiar streak of black down the middle that reminded her of a cat's eye. She hoped he would enjoy it.
As for Lucian, the boy with the shock of bright orange hair, she had a different gift. The twins while alike were very different and so she had to really think on what would best suit him. When she came up with it she only hoped Avian would wait a bit before gifting it to him. Rather than jewlery, Haiti crafted a weapon. An ivory dagger actually. She'd been surprised she'd managed to do so still, what with her limited knowledge of craft she'd had at the age of 12, but she supposed it was in the blood. In Lucian's gift, a bright amber stone was on the hilt on one side, but a dark green emerald on the other and the hilt made of a black, but smooth wrapping with a bright orange feather attatched by string. All very difficult to find in this day and age, but Haiti relied heavily on her knowledge of fleamarkets and trading grounds for more....exotic items.
She finally reached the last bag. This had been the hardest gift she believed for there no way to truly emphaise in gift alone what her dear wife meant to her, no gift she could craft and no words she could have spun in sonnet or poem that could show her exactly what she meant to her. The love of her life had done so much for her, in so many ways than either of them could've believed when they first met.
Kalontine's day wasn't the only day that she celebrated this knowledge, but it was an expected holiday.
She hoped Ophelia would like it.
She'd spun it. Woven it together into a lovely robe of color though to her it dulled in comparison to her mate's markings.
It was one she was most proud of and so she hoped beyond hope Ophelia would love it. Each stitch and design was carefully threaded, and more than once repaired from Haiti's own anger and frustration, but it was there. Haiti thought about her life carefully as she gazed at the robe she'd crafted herself, the soft thread and designs. Blacks, pinks and whites and while not customary for a robe quite like this, it matched her mate. The only thing that mattered to her.
Haiti gazed at each gift and put them back in their hiding places. She looked at the clock on the wall. A quarter to ten. They would arrive at 12, though they were supposed to be there by 11. Knowing her children however she doubted they'd ever arrive anywhere on time. Their personalities simply demanded it. Chuckling to herself, the aging kalon smiled softly and glanced back longingly at her bed with her mate still in it despite her stirring. She yawned and then shook her head. She could rest later. For now she needed to get ready for her family. Smiling gently, jade green eyes aglow, the African medic smiled and went to get ready.
