I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION:Mechanics
YOUR QUESTION:Like last time, I'm wondering if I've done this right? I apologise for my bad handwriting, but I hope you can make it out ;-; Also ignore the awful scribble in the middle of the page, I forgot that 4Ta would be 210+W, not just 210 ;-;

YOUR QUESTION:How do I divide a 2-digit number by another 2-digit number? E.g 56 / 36

this is how it was taught to me, I hope you can make sense of it

first you count how many times the second number fits into the first number, and you subtract them
36 only fits into 56 once, so you keep that 1 for your answer and subtract 56-36=20
since 36 doesn't fit into 20, the rest of your answer won't be whole numbers, and instead it will be 1.[something]

to find that "something", you add another 0 to 20 and count how many times 36 fits into that.
36 fits into 200 5 times, 5 x 36=180, 200-180= 20
you add 5 to your answer, so now you have 1.5

since you notice that you got 20 for the second time, you could do the above calculations again, but you'll end up with the same answer again (5 x 36=180, 200-180= 20), which means you could write an infinite amount of 5 to your answer (1.555555555555.....)
but since that's inconvenient to write down all the time, we usually pick how long we want the answer to be, and round up or down the answer accordingly.
so from 1.55555555..... you would get ~1.556

so for the process itself, if you have a problem like A/B=?
1. count how many times B fits into A, write down answer in whole numbers, the rest of the answer will be behind a period/whatever you guys call it
2. multiply B with the amount of times it fits into A and subtract A - (the number you just got)
3. add a zero at the end of your new number and repeat steps 1-3 until you end up with 0 at some point, or if the numbers start repeating themselves.

I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION: Math (Problem Solving)
YOUR QUESTION:I've been a bit stumped on this one and I was wondering a way to solve for the missing variable.
A ship must be unloaded by two cranes in 12 hours. Both cranes worked for 8 hours and then one of them broke. The rest of the work was done by the other crane in 7 hours. How long would each crane take to do the entire job if it was working alone?

I'll try to help!

(Let's say the broken crane is C2 and the other is C1)

1. First, you need to find how much work that has been done by both. To find this, divide 8 (hours they worked together) by 12 (when it should be finished by both), 8/12 = 4 × 2/4 × 3 =4/4 × 2/3 = 2/3
(n/n is always equal to 1, with n being all number except zero. This also apply to the opposite 1 = n/n)

2. Then, find out how much work that C1 did after C2 broke. 1 - 2/3 = 3/3 - 2/3 = 1/3. You'll find out that C1 did one third of the work alone.

3. You know that C1 need 7 hours to finish the rest of work, which is 1/3 of it. Convert this into equation : 1/3 work = 7 hours.

4. Multiply both side by 3, so it become : 3/3 work = 3 × 7 hours.

5. We know 3/3 is equal to 1 (refer to step 1) and 3 × 7 is 21, so substitute those into the equation : 1 work = 21 hours . Now we know that it will need 21 hours for a crane to unload a ship!

Here's my rough work. I draw the timeline to help me visualise the question. I hope this can help!

Posting here to save this thread for later use!! (Oh man, you guys have no idea how many times I've needed something like this but didn't have it. Also, I really like helping others (especially with math) so I'll try to help out sometimes too!)

Thank you so much! This makes a lot of sense now, I really appreciate it! The time line was a great idea. :D

For those who has problems with essay writing I suggest to use writing services. For instance, I have no writing skills and must write 4 essays (2 narrative and 2 descriptive) in a few days (nightmare). So I often use such one service 'cause there are many great topics for writing an argument essay and other tips.
