Fursuit materals are expensive, even ones for low-quality amature suits (if that's what you're going for).

You could make a basic head out of upholstry foam, and fur it with cheap low-quality fur and or fleece. I would guess it would run you $30-$60 depending on where you get supplies. But at that rate it feels smarter to just save for better materials or to commission someone else.

You could also use clay to make a tiny version of a character if you want to practice animal shapes.

If you want to practice making tails or bodysuits etc then you could use fleece or a cheap fabric but it won't be fluffy.

In my experience and from what I've seen, almost every fursuit maker has to have those first 1 or 2 suits that don't look as good or high-quality before they get the hang of it. Some people are lucky and talented makers from the start. But most have to start somewhere, and learn from mistakes. I'm still learning :P

Thank you for the advice! It's a bummer there is not real cheaper way to gain experience but after reading all of it, I might just save up and get HQ materials, even if it doesn't turn out how I would want. I'd rather make a wearable amateur suit that doesn't look exactly how I'd like than have a practice suit made out of fleece and the what, especially if the "cheap" stuff isn't all that much cheaper.

Well, time to save up some money! c:

I always get my foam from Walmart. It’s not the best and is 1” but is cheap, easy to cut, and I can make roughly 2 and a half heads with one roll for $15. I can’t buy a lot online and my parents make me buy faux fur on amazon. It actually hasn’t been bad quality and a lot of places have free shipping on amazon. I’d suggest other sources though like fursuitsupplies.com has a ton. A lot of other things like felt and foam for the eyes along with mesh can be found at Joann fabrics. Don’t get foam from there because a small square costs three arms and a leg. Don’t get faux fur at Joann or Walmart. The fur is bad quality and looks bare. I described it as a wet dog sort of look :\

This is from my experience though. Go look around and find what you think is best based off your resources <3

Hello, Nevy! :3 All you need to be a furry is a love of anthropomorphic animals. Which you already appear to have, so you're good to go. There really isn't much in the way of rules other than the obvious ; no art/design/character theft. Some species associated with the furry community (like Dutch Angel Dragons, Wickerbeasts, or Manokits) have more rules. Another great site for a furry is Furvilla! (It's a pet site, but it's geared toward furries, even has fursuit and convention chat sections!)

Honestly, you can make your fursona whatever you want. You don't even need a fursona if you don't want one. Usually fursonas are characters that represent you. They don't have to represent you entirely ; they can be an idealized version, or they can draw inspiration from you as a person. You can even have multiples!

Making a fursona is simple. (I'll use Melti, my fursona, as an example) Take either a species you are similar too or a species you really like (I love Spyro, so I made her a dragon.), choose some of your favorite colors (Red and purple are my favorites, but they don't go together so I just went with purple.), and design a character. You can see mine in my signature.

I agree that making a fursona is a solid way to make yourself feel apart of the furry community. I don’t really have one *wheeze* I change a lot and am very indecisive. I mostly make characters with traits similar to mine at the time and together they make a me lol. Again pick a species that you like and I always google colour palettes to help me with colouring. Palettes can have images to help you. Don’t be afraid to make up a species (or mix) or use something simple like a puppy!

Example:
Image
At the time I really liked angel dragons so I applied it to some bases to come up with the design and then added my own personal touches.

Image
Some of these personal touches include glasses (I have glasses X3), horn pattern and placement. Colours different than my palette (only slightly) and omg a gorgeous tail. I’m so proud of that detail because I decided to be angsty and not have a normal tail. I then experimented and got what you see today! A large floofy feather along with two long and two short ones. Unfortunately these colours are expensive to get in faux fur and angel dragons aren’t my favourite to sculpt :\

Small things like this can add tons of character! Some ideas to think about for your character or sona are
•freckles
•glasses
•hair (I don’t do this for some reason...)
•birthmarks
•ear/nose design (my new suit is having a swirled nose)
•claws
•big ears! Add cuteness

But overall I’d say find maybe a base online of an animal you like, a palette you adore, and come up with a design with a base. Then draw or commission your own art not using the base and add personal touches.

I also love PMs so shoot me one if you want. Anyone honestly <3 also in case anyone is wondering my angel dragons name is Buttercup. That seriously was almost my name XD so it’s a personal story that connects me to this character even more.

Sorry for the long post guys. So I want to have a prop to go with my husky suit. It’s not done or even close but if anyone has any ideas let me know. I want to base it off something like on how I named them. They’re an Inuit- whom typically live in northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. I want to base my prop off of the culture. To sum it up...
Well
Disney’s “Brother Bear”
I looked it up and it is centered around the Inuit culture and people. Of course I’m not doing this to offend people at all. I love this type of culture and I love the Canadian, Alaskan area. Nanook (or Nanuk) is actually a polar bear believed to control the success of hunting polar bears. From what I’ve seen, the Inuit people believe that everything -everything- has a soul. I love learning about this stuff because it’s very interesting to think about, and I really want to apply any of these things to my suit!

Again if anyone has any fun ideas, no matter how insane, for me to make. You don’t have to quote me either this is loooooong- so just @disrep me

I started making my first fursuit about two days ago and was wondering if anyone could help me by critiquing my work thus far. Thanks!

It looks amazing for your first suit! I have made a few fursuits so far and im not a professional, but some constructive criticism, maybe add some foam to the bottom of the jaw to add some depth, and carve out the middle (of the jaw) out a bit? It would make it look less than a slab of foam. Other than that its really good! I hope this helped, good luck and I'd love to see it when you finish! :D

Thank you for the advice! I plan on fixing up the bottom jaw tomorrow. The current one I have placed isn’t an exact fit by once I get the right one cut out I’ll make sure to give it that nice depth!

It looks great! Especially for a first! I would suggest rounding out the head some more. Personally, I prefer less of a drop on my fursuit's face from the head to the muzzle, and add foam to create a gradual slope on the ridge of the nose/muzzle, but those things depend on the style you're going for, and the species your character is. If you prefer, say, a shorter muzzle for a more human-looking face, then I would keep it short. But I would build up that ridge more if it were me.

As said before, I would also build more support on the bottom jaw.

Maybe add some eyebrow ridges/more foam to exaggerate expression? If you're going for that, of course. All depends on your style and preference.

Anyway I think you're doing a great job! Good luck!

On another topic, what are some "idle" poses or movements everyone likes to do in your fursuit to stop yourself from looking stiff? I like to kind of dance in place, haha. Although I have no idea what to do with my arms apart from wave them around randomly??
