Religious arguments. One can be having a nice disscussion on parts of their religion then some other jerk has to swoop in and say "you're all freakin stupid because you believe in that rather than this" or "everyone who believes in that is *insert generic demeaning adj. here*". I HATE it. Doesn't matter if its christians or atheists doing it, its freakin rude. Its not as if we were trying to jam our disscussion down your throats.

Ugh. Then I get all shakey when trying to respond because I'm so angry...

I agree - I personally really enjoy friendly debates so long as everything stays respectful, but the whole thing can get ruined by someone getting too emotionally involved or going on the attack. Not only does it make people want to stop with the discussion and tend to degenerate both sides into just insulting each other, but it reflects badly on others who are on the same side belief-wise as the swooper. It's not like insulting someone else's point of view makes them more likely to consider your own - it just makes everyone defensive and upset and increases the feeling of 'us vs. them', which doesn't exactly further understanding of others. >.< It's the same no matter what is being discussed, whether it's religion, climate change, breed bans or Twilight. Sorry about what happened, by the way - I feel a little like it was my fault. =(

I'm a big player in the 'getting too emotionally involved' group because I can't help it. It annoys me that I always take broad generic insults personally If that last bit was directed towards me, don't worry about it. I can't see how it would possibly be your fault...

Religious arguments on the internet only end one way.

Everyone gets angry because they don't want to understand, they just want to be right. Someone calls someone else "ignorant" or some variation of the word, and everyone goes home thinking they won.

In short, everyone looks like a moron.

By 'too involved' I meant more the kind of situation where people begin to really go at it in an argument, and then they start using the BIG lettering and nothing but caps in the entire post, and it basically ends up with a big flame war of just them screaming insults at each other, and I'm pretty sure I've never seen you go down that road. If it's a subject you feel strongly about that's being discussed, then of course you're going to have a strong emotional involvement, but most people are able to handle it reasonably maturely. That's where you can get the really enjoyable discussions and debates, and I've met a lot of great people who are interesting to talk with through such discussions, yourself included. I'm the same with taking broad or indirect insults personally and am definitely familiar with the 'shaking with rage' feeling when someone's really getting at me in some manner, and I used to be pretty bad about blowing up at people when I was young, so sometimes it's hard for me to resist tearing a strip off the occasional obnoxious person, no matter whose 'side' they're on. >.> I try to ignore the rude people as much as possible and carry on, hard though it can be - it's not worth the stress. Our group members tend to hang around each other in the forums, so I might have inadvertently drawn them in, hence... yeah. >.<

I love debates too. Debates on fundamental ideas and beliefs expecially. But very few actually want to debate with me >_< (Lol I managed to change my friend's opinion once... and I was thinking the opposite XD That was funny.) If the discussion doesn't end in insults, then it ends in 'I believe this and you believe that and that's that.' -sigh- Ah well. Debates are not necessarily meant to change minds, but to open them afterall. owo;
