Art tablets to use in the Oekaki

Postby BlueEyedKite » Mon Jul 03, 2023 5:37 am

EDIT Oh whoops, editing the topic slightly to keep within the rules of this forum.

Let's talk about art tablets! But more specifically the art tablets you use to draw in the oekaki ^^ Definitely interested in your experience in pen tablets vs display tablets! I'm curious if display tablets don't jive well with the oekaki, do you use one?

What I would love to hear:

- what tablet are you using for the oekaki? How does it run?

- what's your thoughts on screen display tablets?

- any experience with the Huion Kamvas series?

- if your tablet does not like the oekaki xD well we want to know that too (and I'm sorry)

Please keep the topic on art tablets c: thanks!

Re: Help me pick out my birthday art tablet!!

hey there, i've just switched over from an Intuos to a Cintiq 22 HD touch (got mine second hand so it was much cheaper than original and it works all fine) and let me tell you, having an actual screen was such an eye opening experience even though i've always thought it wouldn't be such a difference and stuck to the Intuos for almost 5-6 years. It really gets rid of the somewhat awkward feeling of drawing somewhere and having to look elsewhere

It's just been a few weeks since I've switched over so I can't tell you about the long term but so far I've not noticed anything that displeases me about it.
I've also looked into the kamvas but thought I'd keep going with wacom mostly because pretty much every drawing application (including chicken paint) gives support to wacom products so you don't have to pull out your hair trying to figure out how you're going to make it enable specific features. i've never had any problems with wacom so far and having a wacom's only con is their high price for offering less features mosly.

If you're going to buy it from a store and not second-hand, i'd suggest you to look into wacom one (not one by wacom though, that one does not have a screen lol), which was what I initially intended to get but then found my current one at a really bargain price.

and if you have any specific questions to ask about switching over from a screenless tablet to one with a screen or anything else, feel free to ask me!

@alphaess Aaaah you have the Cintiq! I have had heart eyes for it and have looked at several review videos in the past weeks. That would probably be my dream display tablet if money was no object, thanks for giving your input!

There is this awkward feeling when drawing I am hoping a display tablet might alleviate. I really think my brain fights the moving my hand but looking ahead, doesn't feel natural like when I am just sketching in a notepad.

I do have a follow up question!

How is your tablet with the oekaki? I was wondering if the display might cause a lot of extra lag while drawing, is that the case?

I've had three. Currently I am using a model by XP-PEN which I really love. It doesn't work well outside of oekaki but I've found that that is likely some issue with my computer as this issue has spanned all three of my drawing tablets.
Previously I had a bamboo pen and touch by Wacom, which I honestly disliked, and a Huion/Monoprice tablet that was okay, but I disliked the battery powered pen. The Wacom tablet is broken and I donated the Monoprice to a charity.

- what's your thoughts on screen display tablets?
I... have never used one. My brother swears by his but I personally don't know if I'd like one since I've gotten so used to the non-display models.

- any experience with the Huion Kamvas series?
No.

- if your tablet does not like the oekaki xD well we want to know that too (and I'm sorry)
All of mine have worked fine with oekaki

Ah the XP Pen! I looked into them but since I am interested in display their screen tablets were more expensive per inch than wacom or Huion. I have only heard good things though so I can understand why you like it c:

Hahaha I had the bamboo pen and touch too! I could never get pen pressure to work with the oekaki xD I re-installed drivers and tried different browsers, no luck. It was a really hardy tablet it took a lot of accidental drops and kept working, sorry lil bamboo.

I envy you. I wish I was used to pen tablets, although it's all I have ever used. I practice by sketching and I can tell when I move to digital drawing there is a downgrade in quality. Drawing without looking down does not come easy for me.

Thanks for your input it was cool info ^^ and have a blast drawing!
