@cat;; Oh poor Skully! I hope you're able to get him to trust people again. Its so awful to hear about how some people treat these lovely creatures. I don't have any bird rehab stories unfortunately, but 2 of my dogs are rescues, all of my horses and snakes are rescues and so is my cat. My Sun Conure is the first non-rescue pet I've bought. My 4 guinea pigs were also rescue girls but sadly passed away a few years ago due to various cancers.

All of my current pets except for my dog are rescues as well! I'm glad other people like to rescue as well!

Speaking of Skully... He stepped up today!! I asked him, as I usually do, and he just.... did it.. haha he usually strikes at me or get scared, but today he did it for a few seconds before deciding he didn't want to anymore.. Still, it was a huge step and I am really excited to see what the future holds!

@maple awwww she's so cute! Amazons are beautiful!

@cat;; I just feel awful buying pets when I know that there is another animal out there who needs me more. After all, adopting an animal from a shelter saves two lives; the one you adopted and the one who makes it into the now empty spot in the shelter.
Bear and Heidi my two lovely mutts both came from puppy mills. Our neighbour's brother Terry rescued Bear and his 11 siblings. Heidi was rescued from a flea market by my hairdresser's friend who is a vet.
My cat Felicity had been thrown in a river in a plastic bag with another kitten, unfortunately the other kitten didn't make it but luckily Felicity was rescued.
My horses Bean, Apollo, Fraulein and Ardee'ay were all RSPCA horses. My first horse Sweetie was on her way to the abattoir when she was rescued by my cousin. My snakes Bo, Lilith and Severus were all rescued from a house during a raid on a house that was housing illegal dogfights.
Oh congrats! I'm sure you'll find someone who will love him. You could always call an animal welfare service if the place that has SKully is not looking after the animals properly.

How many birds do you own? ( if applicable ): 2 budgies, Tom and Jerry!
How long have you had them?: 6 months!
What brings you to the bird chat?: Mostly for getting help and advice my budgies, but also for looking and reading about everyone else's pretty birds!

Here are my two!

They're adorable! I love those lime green/yellow budgies!

We have been trying to get it shut down for AGES, but we think he has the Department of Agriculture (DOA) on his side. If he's been in business, treating animals this way, for 26 years, there's something fishy going on. We hope that something will be done, but it's a long hard process. We will never stop fighting, but it will just be a while for sure

Thank you!
Also, I need help on starting over with my budgies and/or regaining their trust once again. I'm a first time bird- owner and I'd LIKE to say I'm doing pretty good. They're not miserable, the lady at the pet-store said our cage was big enough for the two, they've got their food and water and I don't feed them anything toxic. I clean up their cage, I give them toys, yada yada, the usual. However, when I had them at first, I had gained their trust pretty easily and me being a big dum-dum, I decided to try and clip Jerry's wings (I looked up how to safely clip them and all that stuff) He was a biter, and I immediately put him back in the cage after that. Now, up to this day, he's been traumatized ever since. As for Tom, he didn't really care and he'll come to me with enough coaxing, but he's been shyer recently for some reason I do not know. Ever since that incident, I haven't put my hand in their cage to do anything except change their food and water and put treats.

That probably might change your opinion about me, but it happened, and I regret it. So I want to know ways to REGAIN trust with your budgie. I also forgot to mention the I live with three other sisters (15, 12, 9) and a dog, but the dog isn't allowed upstairs except at night to sleep in my moms room, and even then the room to the birds is closed so she can't get in. The dog isn't really a problem as much as my sisters are. The youngest one likes to taunt them or bother them and hit their cage (but she doesn't put her hand in or hit the bird. She just does it to make them fly or annoy me) I've tried anything and I just want to form a lasting bond with my birds. Any tips?

Hey there, now, i'm not used to budgies, i'm used to something 5 times the size, but i have the feeling its mighhhhht be on the same level, kinda. Now, i know the topic is hotly debated about wing clipping, and when i think of little parrots like budgies, i totally understand clipping for their safety. Now, your going to want to work with baby steps, first step, put hand in cage, leave hand in cage with a treat on it. They are probably not going to like it, let them fly around in there and get their panic out, once they realize the hand isn't there to grab them, they will calm down. your gonna want to work on this until they are very comfortable around your hand, then you can start to work with step up. Lots of treats always help, their are also a boat load of great videos on youtube on how to tame those little ones.

But i will say your younger sister is NOT HELPING! To a bird, having someone wack a cage is close the the same level as some whacking them, its incredibly mean. I would first try to sit he down and tell her very sternly to stop, and if she dosen't, hate to be a snitch, but get you mom and dad involved and if you ever catch her whacking the cage, there should be some form of punishment, it is not acceptable to do that to the poor birds, disrespecting animals is a no.

Anyways, just my two cents good luck taming!

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone had some advice on getting birds to step up on to my finger without treats.
Both my Rosa Bourkes will happily step up if I am holding millet but if I don't, they have a look around to see if I'm hiding it then just go away.

And another thing that I just have to share; I let them out of their cage the other day and with some encouragement they had a bit of an explore ( this was awesome because they usually won't come out and if they do they just sit near the cage not doing anything) and they hopped on my finger and hand (with treats :) ). Lotti hopped on my arm once and Mel accidentally landed on my head but didn't freak out and fly off. I have never owned birds that have done these kinds of things. I am so happy, it's such and awesome feeling!
