I have two cats, but one I have had for 4 years, so I'm really close to it. It so cute and it likes to curl up on/next to me.

Re: Cat Chat

I realized that I never posted my girl or her boyfriend on here.

This is Saffron, or Saff/Saffy. She's my baby girl, my parents let me get her as a graduation present. We'd gone to the local shelter just to look at the already declawed cats as my parents did not want a cat with claws and I didn't want to be the one to declaw a new pet. There were only two that were there; one with FIV and one that shrank back from me and hissed when I approached, so instead I just looked at the kittens to see if I could convince my parents to not force me to declaw my cat. Saffy (then Sassy) reached out and patted me when I passed by her cage, meowing and rubbing against the bars, and thoroughly distracted me from the kittens and won my heart.

When we got her out to meet her properly she impressed my parents by being incredibly friendly and playful and showing them that when she swatted she left her claws sheathed. We actually picked her up and checked to see if her cage was marked wrong, but there were definitely claws on that foot. They saw that I was smitten and agreed to let me try to teach her how to use a scratching post, and within a week (had to be fixed and health tested first) she was mine :3 Saffron has proven to them that a cat doesn't have to be declawed to keep from ripping up the furniture.

Recently I've taught her a few tricks that she enjoys preforming, but the one she likes the most is fetch. She'll pick up her toys and drop them at my feet, then pest me until I throw it for her.

This is Saffron's boyfriend Guy. He's not mine but he hangs out on my fire escape and meows at her through the window. She sits on the inside of said window and meows back.

Edit: Oh, I forgot. Saff is about 3 years old :3 I got her when she was 1yr2mos and she turned 3 this past April :3

Jazi wrote:x2 on six months. As a general rule, before first heat (which occurs ~6mos) for queens, and before mating season (~6mos-1yr) for toms. I have seen that toms generally get larger and appear heavier bones if they're allowed to remain intact until they hit their first year, but I haven't seen any specific health pros or cons for it. The thing with toms is that an intact tom is much more likely to spray once he reaches sexual maturity or when he's exposed to a queen in heat (and the second one isn't much preventable if you have strays or feral cats in the area) than a neutered male. Cats can be safely operated on as soon as they are at least 2lbs, but most vets prefer 4-6mos for kittens.

Thank ye :3

6 months, but if the kitten is to small(aka - runt of the litter ect) vets may want to hold it off due to size

He needs other vaccinations aside from just the ones he'll get when he's 6 months...

When you take him in for the set that's coming up soon, you should ask your vet when they'd feel confident neutering him. Like I said in my previous post, I'm unaware of any health problems in cats from early spay/neuter (though if anyone's found any studies saying otherwise, I'm totally open to reading them!), and the only benefit from waiting longer that I've heard of is that toms can appear stockier.

Kittens make all kinds of silly noises; they're babies and they're figuring out what sounds they can make and what sounds make you pay attention to them. If you're concerned, though, you can ask your vet about it and make sure he's not vocalising because of any pain or discomfort. My Saffy will walk around the house meowing to herself. Some cats are just talkative, some only meow to say they hurt, some don't meow at all! It all comes down to knowing your cat, and luckily since he's a kitten you both have plenty of time to get to know each other.
