Probably shading techniques I could use to make the rune look more realistic c:
I would definitely participate in the runes with hats thing ^^
Shading's easy once you get the hang of it! ^^ It takes a while to learn, and it's a lot of practice, practice, practice! And everyone has a different style if shading, which I like. This is just how I learned it. You've got your main color, which is unshaded, and I usually use four different values of that color to shade - a darker one for shading general cast shadows, then I go over it again and add even darker shadows where something would be really dark, or where I want to highlight something that's in shadow. Then you use a lighter shade of your original color for highlights. Then you very carefully add in just a few white highlights, for where you want things to really pop! Highlights make things seem like they're coming at you, especially if they're surrounded by shadows; like with the bulge of a muscle or bone, for example (and where skin would dip in, or curve away from the viewer is in shadow). My art teacher discourages the use of pure white (except for those few highlights), or pure black, and ever since I took her class I think my drawings and painting have really improved, just with that little tip. Pure black makes things go flat, and if you're not careful it ususlly turns out looking like a big black hole, so I use a dark grey or blue for the places that are really, really dark. Again, highlights draw the eye's attention, so too many white highlights can make a painting confusing to look at, and also can lead to it seeming flat. I tend to go overboard with the highlights are end up having to dull a few down. X3
I also sometimes like to add a second light source after all that, especially a different colored light. It adds more interest. I love playing around with colored light and shadows! (See Eidolon's pretty picture in my siggy? He's got pink and yellow reflecting on him from behind.)
I hope that helps a little. Shading is one of my favorite parts of doing a drawing or painting! ^^ It just adds so much depth, and mood, and like you said adds an element of realism. Although, I don't know if your picture needs much shading. It looks pretty great as it is. You already have some nice highlights. Sometimes things look great with no or only minimal shading.
