While Chicoons are not an aquatic species, they know the ocean and admire its beauty. But the ocean must be respected as well, for she is a fearsome beast who has brought even the most experienced navigators to their untimely ends.

A long time ago, Maelstrom was mortal, and lived along the shoreline. She was a crochety old chicoon, who had lived many years and done many things in her long life. She was considered an advisor to all those who chose to brave the deep waters, and rescuing those who fell victim to the waves, gaining injuries in the process. However, as she aged, her strength waned.
On the night of a particularly nasty storm, Maelstrom was swept out into the ocean by the waves. The gods were moved by her bravery and willingness to help others, so they raised her to their level.

Maelstrom is just as grouchy as a god, but will still rescue those in need, and often walks among mortals who may still need her advice. If a chicoon loses something to the ocean, they may find it returned to them the next morning by Maelstrom herself.
