how do you make it to where the stripes are a darker color? do you use a whole separate layer and lessen the opacity of the layer? (if that made any sense)

That sounds like a good idea but I actually did it manually lol. I did all the stripes in orange on one layer than drew the brown patches on a new layer, and lowered the opacity so I could see the stripes underneath and trace them.
However, your way would work too, drawing the stripes on a new layer and setting it to "multiply"
