Some people were chosen during the initial staff search, where they sent in samples of their designs and were picked out from that. The artist search is to supplement the number of artists chosen from that, as well as to give those who are still improving chances to keep trying.

I search patterns on the Internet for inspiration. C: maybe that'll help you haha.

Sometimes if you have trouble coming up with designs putting together color palettes can help. There are a lot of times I'm not sure what to make until I see several colors next to each other, and then a design comes to mind.

Here are a few sites that make it very easy to create custom color palettes: ColorBlender, Adobe Color CC, and Coolors.

I put them in order of how much I like them, ColorBlender is my favorite. All three are great though.
