Killian was born a singleton, as many Fables are. They were the apple of their parents' eyes, a young thing that could do no wrong. They seemed to be on the lazy side for a foal, but it takes all types to run a herd. Killian spent more time basking and enjoying the sun on their fur than running around like most little foals. Their leisure lifestyle didn't clash with anyone else's way of living in the herd, and it was just accepted that they'd forever be one to dilly dally.
They were fourteen months old when they first felt their calling. The calling to do something bigger, something greater than they were. Greater than any of the Fables they knew, greater than their herd and the place they lived in. They knew it wouldn't be easy, and they'd never aspired for anything great before -- it was scary, the unknowing, the mental burden of anxiety that came with it. All this to say, Killian knew they had to leave everything behind to follow this calling. They knew this in their heart of hearts, and as scary as it was, it was also comforting. Comforting to think that beyond this soft, idyllic life, there was something more exciting just on the edge of their perception.
They planned it all out for ages. It was their second birthday by the time they'd finally decided on what to do, how to do it. No one in the herd was willing to follow a fool's errand, and their parents pleaded with them to stay. Killian knew they couldn't, though. How could they forego the call of destiny? The call of adventure, of greener pastures, of onward and upward? This was a large change from everything they'd ever known -- and their herd didn't understand a lick of it. They thought Killian was crazy, but didn't hold them back. If they felt a calling to go into the unknown, who were they to stop them?
It wasn't all rainbows and sunshine. The further they went, the worse the weather seemed to be. Killian had felt a calling to the mountains, to the snow. Thankfully they'd been blessed with enough fur to make this comfortable to them, even if they were used to the sunshine and green grass. It was lonely, if Killian had to put a word to it. They met many herds -- some kind and inviting, others standoffish and protective of what they had. The further they wandered into the snow, the more hostile herds became. It made sense; they had to protect what little resources they had. Killian was starting to wonder if they should turn back.
Though they were forlorn and homesick, Killian stuck to their plan. There was still something calling them, begging them further. They had no clue what it was, but it came to them in dreams: a long expanse of white with rainbow running through it. They knew they would know it when they saw it.
