Welcome to Flying Fox Farms!
Born from a love of genetics and the desire to try new patterns, these are ADOPTABLE breedable horses that I am making to work on structured genetics, lineages, and generational inheritance. I am also focusing heavily on the art aspect, working with new techniques, patterns, and colors that I am trying to match by eye.

Note that in honor of Pride Month, all hooves and eyes of June adopts will have pride flag colors, or just bright colors!

I am unable to work much due to some health issues.

I am working on this a bit more now. Part of what was holding me back was some computer equipment upgrades that were direly needed. While I couldn't afford them, unfortunately, my hand was forced by my 21yo monitor spontaneously dying. I've had to replace both screens in the last year, as well as my mouse and headset. I literally run my equipment until it fails, and I had less than a week's warning I would need to drop funds into a new screen.

I've not posted in over two weeks. I apologize. I normally would add info when this happens but the truth is, NaNoWriMo has left me so addled I've had to drop a lot of things temporarily.
This isn't over, and won't be for another 600+ adopts!

Yesterday I woke up feeling ill. Went to the doc for nausea. Turns out I'm extremely sick and in quarantine for a week now. but at least the nausea is gone.

Yesterday, my art monitor malfunctioned for the final time. I have gotten a replacement in but it has color issues. I will do my best to get a new monitor ASAP so please be patient while we work on getting things resolved.

Apparently, every horse prior to 211 with Rabicano is incorrect. This includes more than 30 adopts, as near as I can tell, and I am NOT going to be updating them.

Apparently, a number of horses with the Sabino pattern are... wrong. As near as I can tell, the following adopts are affected:

I am unsure at this time if these adopts will be corrected.

I updated the cover. I used a mouse and the gradient tool. Please don't judge me the pink horse is holding my fragile emotions together in a vague state of happy today.

HIATUS ANNOUNCEMENT
I will return to FFF in May. Thank you for your continued support. I have too much going on right now and I REALLY need a break from FFF and the stress it tends to cause. For every 12m design, I spend around 30-45 minutes doing the genetics, drafts, checking values, updating the excel file, and more. All of which you don't see. I need a break and I feel like reaching 200 has been a massive accomplishment.
For now, I'll be doing other linearts to ease my artblock.

We are nine days from the 1 year anniversary of Flying Fox Farms!
As such, for the next week, adoptions are FREE with a limit of two adopts per person, provided you still fill out the form!
As far as the 200 horse celebration, one addition I've planned on is adding rollable color mutations. I am still working out how these will pass on from parent to baby.

I am on hiatus for medical reasons. I had surgery 10/20/22 and since then I've repeatedly been sick. This will resume in 2023!

The next batch is Generation 3. Thanks to the spreadsheet, I'm ready for it, but it will take time.
Also, I have surgery this coming week, so art may take a break for up to a MONTH so I can heal.

I'm back! My goal is four adopts a week, or more if possible.

I am doing sets of eight with a common theme: solids, appaloosas, white markings, same base with different markings, etc. It helps me make this less monotonous.

I've not abandoned this, I found out with THREE DAYS' NOTICE that my new service dog was arriving! She got in last night so I'm taking a few days to spend extra time with her and do training walks. I also had to deep-clean the apartment to prepare and then I spent two days working for my mother in exchange for some extra cash that I'll be using for vet bills since she's not had all her shots and needs to be spayed.
So, quick break, because Padmé and I had such short notice about her coming home!

When it's a chimera, you are in essence looking at two horses. It's a twin that fused together in the womb and thus has different genetics that were possible from those parents

Somatic is a gene that's damaged or something and doesn't cover everything, so that can be either a gene that doesn't work (for example, a bay where in a part of the fur the A gene doesn't work and thus looks black) or even appear as a whole new mutation together, for example making the fur 'broken' white or graying in that spot

Breeding Process:
1. Pick parents.
2. Pick out all single-outcome genetics.
3. Roll for non-single-outcome genetics.
4. Generate color name.
5. Do art.
6. Note on parent pages excel file the breeding, linking to foal.

So, a quick FAQ:
-Can I adopt one? Do you sell designs?
No, these are not for adoption. If you are interested, I'd be willing to recreate a pattern of your choice though!
UPDATE 4/8/22: I will part with pets once they have been bred once! You may canonly keep their foals in their lives or cut them out and say they never existed.
If there is a G2 batch after the G1 batch, they have been bred! You may change gender/etc IDC.
Anything with a timer under an hour is three wishlist pets (common-uncommon).
Anything over an hour is one rare.
I doubt any exist that are over an hour, but that says a lot about my effort into some of the designs.

-Are these genetics based off real life?
Kinda. I'm using a generator for them, but I believe the genetics it uses may be out of date.. For my dog adopts, the answer is generally yes: I worked in canine genetics for several years.

-What will you do with the horses upon reaching your goal? What even is your goal?
My goal is to reach and create a generation 10 non-inbred pet with no gaps in lineage: both parents have two parents, as do their parents, all the way back a full ten generations.
After this concludes... I have no idea.

Gen 2+ Breeding Process

First, I start with this.

This is a list of the latest adopts, all of whom are unbred. I sort them by gender, and make sure I can view the ID numbers for each adopt.

Next, I list out the stallion ID numbers, and pick what mare they will be bred with. I also assign the IDs and genders of the foals.

So in this example, 297 (stallion) and 300 (mare) will be bred, resulting in 305 (stallion).
The numbers to the far right correspond to the adopts as I view them. Here's the pairings visually:


Next, I isolate the genes that are guaranteed:

Both parents carry the same genes in this example for all guaranteed results, but there is a second scenario where I can do this, where parent 1 is EE and parent 2 is ee, resulting in a guaranteed Ee for the offspring.

Next, I roll dice for the other genes, and finish the genotype for the foal:

Usually I only need two dice for this, a d6 and a d4. Anything that has two outcomes is rolled as odds dominant and evens recessive, and anything with four outcomes is rolled as such:
