The story behind them:
As a young griffin, Lunestrae was quiet, outspoken, and obediant, while Celestia was brave, strong, and outgoing. They lived in a colony with lots of other griffins, in a foreign realm. Celestia always led missions, while Lunestrae went along as just a stealth warrior. That was a pretty big position, but Lunestrae always felt like she was living in Celestia's shadow.
The day Celestia was to become lead warrior and huntress, was the day Lunestrae was truly jealous of her. She wanted her sister's place, but knew she couldn't get it in her current state. She became the master of cunning. She started to stray away from the others, until she barely saw them at all.
When Celestia tried to talk to her about what was wrong, she replied, "Nothing is wrong, sister, I'm fine." and went back to sulking. Soon after, Celestia started to suspect that Lunestrae was plotting something. She found out when Lunestrae trapped her. She struggled to get out, until Lunestrae showed up.
"I must congratulate you, sister. Not many a cage can keep me in." Celestia had said.
"Ha. I am no longer your sister. I have no relations." Lunestrae replied, her voice full of contempt. She walked up to the cage, picked it up in her claws, and started flying with it.
"What are you doing?" Celestia said. They were nearing the portal.
"I said I had no relations. That is not quite true yet," Lunestrae flew over the portal to Earth, "but soon it will be." She dropped the trap, with Celestia in it.
"You--you evil--how could you?" Celestia managed to stay alight, even in the trap. She flew up, over Lunestrae, and folded her wings in. Lunestrae realized what she was doing a second too late. She screeched as the falling cage landed on and snapped one of her wings.
Celestia wasted most of her energy in the process of lifting the cage, and didn't bother to open her wings again.
And they fell.
When she woke, Lunestrae realized she was on Earth as well.
"What--ouch," she winced as she lifted her broken wing, "It wasn't supposed to be like this!" She went over to the cage where Celestia lay, awake but too tired to get up.
"You," Lunestrae spat, unlocking the latch, "you did this. You brought us both down. I can't believe you." Celestia chuckled.
"I did it for you. Being a leader would suit you ill. I'm sorry you wanted the position." Celestia said, her voice barely above a whisper. Lunestrae growled and stalked away, angry at Celestia for breaking her wing, which hung limply at her side. You can only get so far on foot, she thought, so I'd better start now. She wanted to get as far away from Celestia as possible.
