Story:
:: I wasn't the son of the leader, but it felt like I could be. He payed a lot of special attention to me, but my mother wouldn't tell me why. I was a little uncomfortable about it but my mother would tell me it's nothing to worry about, but maybe this is why I became so adventurous. My first paw steps outside the den, I met someone--a jaguar like me. He was about the same age, but I assumed a few months older because he seemed to know his way around. His dangerous and adventurous spirit, I think, was part of the reason why we became such great friends because I was always looking to get out of the eyes of the elders.
:: My friend's name was Monty. and he taught me about the clans. Most I already knew, like wandering around alone was dangerous because of a war between us and another clan, and the cats of our clan were out to protect us. Some day I knew I would too. But it was Monty who first told me about the stone. He told of its power, which awed us both. It was then we made a pact that we would become Seekers together.
:: Training didn't come soon enough so we tried to train ourselves. Days which we wouldn't be missed we would go out hunting (a basic survival skill taught at a very young age) and practice by catching our targets without killing them and catching them over and over again with new tactics until the prey died of exhaustion or we got bored. Sometimes, well a lot of times, it would end up being accidentally killed. The prey would be brought back to the clan in a rather tattered state, but the kill mark would be perfect and clean. After that we would turn to wrestling as a way to have fun as well as getting a good practice.
:: It was a real treat when we both went into training together. The clan even allowed us to have the same mentor because we were nearly inseparable. But our practicing really payed off. We advanced through training techniques and mastered skills faster than any newbies before. We had gotten moved up to train with the older cubs and eventually we were sent to train personally with the Leader. We showed true promise
:: When I first heard we were going to be sent to train with the leader I had a mix of feelings. I thought it might be a little strange because I saw him enough already but we weren't really bonded, and what if he didn't like what he saw in me? What if all that training I went through was for nothing and I was weak in his eyes. I guess it didn't really matter because Monty was overjoyed. He was better than me anyways so he should be, so I was excited to train because he was.
:: Our training became more challenging but the leader seemed pleased with us. Plenty of times I had wanted to give up but when I saw Monty's determination in his eyes when he looked at the leader I promised to myself I wouldn't let him down. Somehow he was always able to find the strength to get back up.
:: When Monty and me graduated, it was a real honorable moment. We looked at each other and both of our minds went instantly back to our days as cubs and our determination to train and succeed. Now was the moment we were waiting for and we ran off into the forest together across the border for the first time.
:: We were out on a hunt together, me and Monty. It was a special hunt even though we were drenched by a dark pounding rain because I had finally bonded with a bird. Her name was Ornella and just as we bonded she took flight and I let myself go and let her take my eyes where they were needed to see. I saw the world from above for the first time, but slowly she descended into an area that looked familiar but he couldn't tell from the angle being up above. As Ornella got him in for a closer look he could tell just by instinct that something was wrong and he didn't need her to show him what. I shook my head and at one glance at Monty he could tell too. We needed to get back.
:: We ran swiftly through the forest's brush but the rain didn't let up. Soon both of our Sight birds found us again (Monty's a Kestrel) and flew along side us. In a small clearing of the forest, barely recognizable from above, was the Cavallino Clan huddled together in the rain around a mangled body. Velocia Clan I thought and a growl began to rise from my throat. As me and Monty got closer we could tell who it was. It was our first mentor--Gypsus, our lead Seeker. He wasn't Lead Seeker when we had him in training, but his death still stung in our hearts, and now it was time for a new Lead. Only I didn't know it would be me.
:: Monty didn't talk to me anymore after I was announced to be the new Lead Seeker. I knew he wanted the position, but to be honest I was just as surprised as him. It felt empty without him next to me. He was such a big part of my childhood. I thought nothing could fill that void in my heart until I met Sava. When meeting her it felt like all my troubles melted away.
:: We spent much of our time together and a long time passed before I stumbled upon Monty one day out hunting. It had been a good day until this awkward moment. We exchanged few words, until it occurred to me that I had seen little of him with the Seekers. All he did was shrug. The next day however, our Lead Tracker stepped down from his position and picked a new lead. It was Monty. I went over to congratulate my old friend but all he did was stare at me with his cold eyes. It sent chills down my spine.
:: I am leader now. Our previous leader was captured and was taken to the prison tree. A huge storm raged over the night and his tree branch snapped and he was hung. It was an incredibly terrible accident. I wish he was here so that I wouldn't have seen Monty's face when I was elected the new Leader. He was the only one who voted against it. The only one who could comfort me about it was Sava but the moment still creeps up on me in the back of my mind.
:: I woke up one morning to find Monty outside my den. I was surprised but then Sava came up to my side told me to relax. But there was tension in the air and I knew there was something on Monty's mind. Then, he snapped at me. I was taken aback and blood streamed down my face, but now I knew now why he was here and he didn't even have to say it.
:: Monty Challenged me. By Clan code I could not back down. It was a fight to the death and I wasn't sure if I was ready because I began to remember our past childhood memories at each strike we took at each other. Blood flowed from wounds all over both of us. We had trained with each other and knew what we could do. We were too alike there was no way either of us could win so both of us had to die. We both seemed to come to that conclusion, then we charged. I knew he would go for my throat so I went for his stomach. I knocked him down and had given him a nice gouge in his stomach. I didn't realize it until the pain came that he had also slashed at my throat. I could still breathe but there was a lot of blood.
:: I was finished. I just knew it, but Monty had not gotten up. He was strong I knew from training he never gave up. Walking over to him, Ornella flew down with a small bird in her claws--a Kestrel, Monty's Sight bird. I gasped. To loose a Sight bird was to like to loose part of one's soul. It was a pain no one could describe in words.I had the opportunity to kill him then but I walked away. I only got a few feet away until I collapsed from the loss of blood.
:: When I opened my eyes next I saw Sava. She licked my scars and told me what happened. (I had been in a coma for a few days) Monty had been taken to our own prison tree. His wounds had been treated but he was unresponsive and ate nothing. He was predicted to die soon. So I told her to take me to him so I could talk to my friend for maybe the last time.
:: When we arrived at the tree. Monty asked what we were doing and moved his head toward us. Sava whispered to me that was the first time he had moved in days, but I told him I was sorry. We all sat in silence for a few moments then Monty rolled over the the branch he was perched on making the chains rattle until he....dropped. Hung. I cried for the first time on Sava's shoulder.
