When they first came into being, Astreus did not understand the concept of death, so they did not fear it. After all, if someone does not know what something is, why should they worry about it? They were a god, death didn't affect them, so they had no care for it. They didn't put themselves in danger, or any life threatening situations, but they weren't careful about certain things, either. They were just... neutral on it for the most part.
It wasn't until they lost someone dear to them that their views began to change regarding death. They were fairly young for a god, only around 200, when it happened. The grief that they and others felt, how hard it was to process, how much it tore people apart... it absolutely terrified Astreus, the thought of it. They became paranoid and fidgety, staying away from any situation that could put them in harm's way, keeping away from others, essentially shutting themselves away from the worlds they created and any inhabitants on them.
Living like that was terribly lonely, however, and while they could deal with it for the first couple millennia, their resolve started to crumble. They tentatively began to intermingle with the people of their worlds once again, and began to make friends once more. They realized that a lot of their negative reaction was them trying to struggle with their grief, and managed to work through it. Despite losing more friends, Astreus has come to accept death as something that needs to happen. They don't welcome it with open arms, but if it ever showed up, well, Astreus would be kind towards it.
Astreus looked at the young god next to them, frowning. They looked so… exhausted, despite being the god of sleep and dreams. Pulling out their journal, they began scribbling their thoughts down onto paper. 'Are you alright? You seem very tired. Do you need help with anything, or just want to talk?'
Hypnos blinked, slowly. "Ah, no, thank you. I'm alright... Its appreciated, nonetheless." They smiled, shaking their head. "Its just been a little rough in the dreamscape recently, a lot more nightmares than usual. I'm unsure why though... I've been doing so much, and it's just been really... discouraging..." They trailed off, eyes drooping once more. Astreus nodded, ruffling the younger god's hair gently, before turning the page in their journal, writing once more.
'I know it doesn't seem like it, but a lot of us appreciate you and what you do. Despite you being so much younger than me, I look up to you quite a bit, and very much admire you and all of the work you do. In fact, you are probably one of the people I admire most. I cannot imagine how tiring it must be to watch over everyone's minds at night. I know I am not the only one that feels this way. It may be hard right now, but trust me, you will get through this.'
Hypnos sniffled, covering their face with their paws. "Yeah, yeah, okay, you can stop with the kind words." They paused for a minute, before muttering, "Thank you though, I really appreciate it."
Astreus has three places that they go to in order to relax, it just depends on which is closest in most cases, and rarely how they feel. The first relaxation place is the meadow by Cassandra's cottage, to just lie in the sun and bask in its rays. Sometimes Cass or Fera will join them and, depending on which, they will either read or just quietly lay next to each other and possibly chat about the most mundane things in life. Despite it being extremely simple, it is something that they cherish.
Another location they go to in order to relax is Cecily's bakery. They love to curl up with a nice book (recommended to them by either Cassandra or Hazel), a warm drink, and a pastry picked by Cecily based on her own mood or preferences for the day. When the bakery is slower or empty, Cecily will join them and ask them random questions that help them calm down and take their mind off things.
The last location, however, they only go to when they truly want to be alone. When they were younger, they created a planet specifically for themselves to just... exist on. There is flora on it, of course, and small creatures, so they aren't truly alone, but there's no one to disturb them there. They like to sit on a specific hill, just leaning against a tree and closing their eyes. They very rarely have to relax here anymore, as they would much rather spend time with friends, but sometimes you just... need some alone time.
Astreus's eyes narrowed as the sky rapidly became darker. Humming slightly, they turned to head back into the cave they were taking refuge in, hoping if it rained that it would be fine. They had just arrived at this planet a couple days ago and had noticed a storm brewing in the ocean nearby, but didn't think anything of it. Shrugging it off, they curled up into their makeshift bed of leaves and furs, drifting into a peaceful slumber.
Well, it was peaceful, until the feeling of water woke them. Grumbling, they swatted at their nose, turning over and trying to go back to sleep... until they fell off their bed and straight into water. Spluttering, they wiped their face and sat up, soaked to the bone. Eyes wide, their gaze shot over to the mouth of the cave, breathing heavy.
Normally they could see some semblance of light, as the sky was normally clear and bright, but... nothing. Nothing except frequent flashes of light, during which they only saw sheets and sheets of rain, followed by deafening claps of thunder, each causing them to flinch and cover their ears. The constant sound of howling wind and hard rain filled their ears. Their cave had water seeping in, and from what they could see, entire branches had somehow been blown into the entrance of the cave, while leaves and small twigs were scattered entirely throughout.
Humming nervously, they climbed higher in the cave, trying to get to higher ground. Of course, the time they visit a new planet, one of their worst nightmares occurs, especially while they had literally no shelter other than a random cave: a hurricane.
Astreus finds a lot of joys in simple, every day life, since they haven't gotten to experience it much in their centuries of life, so they get very, very attached to the little things. This leads to them having a lot of favorite scents. It'd simply be too hard for them to just pick one out the hundreds that they really like, but if they absolutely had to pick a favorite, they do have a top two!
Their first favorite scent is the smell of magic, which many would say doesn't have a scent, but Astreus finds that it does! It's delicately tied to the person who either holds it in themselves or performs it through years of training and harnessing it, and while its usually not generally a single scent, Astreus can tell when they're smelling magic or smelling a combination of scents, so they consider it as a single smell. Magic usually has one strong note followed by one or two secondary smells. One of their friends, for example, has a strong note of vanilla with secondary notes of ink and parchment, while another has a strong note of ichor with undertones of sugar plums.
Their second favorite scent is the smell of sweets, any sort of sweet, but specifically cinnamon-based ones! They adore all types of sweets, and smelling them always makes them happy. Cinnamon rolls, snickerdoodles, apple pies, pumpkin pies, anything with cinnamon in it is guaranteed to be loved by Astreus, and smelling cinnamon makes then very happy--as well as hungry!
