They hadn’t however gotten in contact with either escalators or elevators untill they were an adult, which might be tipping the scales a bit. They had seen elevators on the few trips taken into the city, but they’d never used them, and the escalators hadn’t been placed any place that they’d been.
They had found it rather lazy to use escalators as a child. (They of course knew what it was even though they’d never seen it in person, considering tv exists.) Why couldn’t people just walk up? But then they’d thought that if you need to go up and down stairs all day like they seem to do sometimes on tv, then maybe you’d deserve to be a little lazy sometimes.
In their village there were a lot of stairs, or at least K’atini had thought so as a kit. There were stairs in the houses, stairs up steep inclines in the village and stairs down to the dock in the lake. There were however no long stairs. The house with the most floors (three), then had two flights of stairs, going up the outside of the house. And in those stairs the kits liked to race each other. First up and then down.
It was really some great fun. And the stairs weren’t those narrow ones that you can only walk up one at a time. No, they were wide, and since they were kits they could fit three side by side, so there was room to overtake and to rush down past those who were still going up.
But all fun must come to an end. When one kit, who shall not be named here, fell down, slamming their face into the railing, resulting in a knocked out tooth. Luckily it was a milk tooth. The adults said that they weren’t allowed to race in the stairs anymore after that, no matter how much they pleaded and said that they’d be careful. So instead they’d had to resort to racing up the hills.
It truly isn’t that bad, but when running in the hills, the ground is often wet and the more they run the more muddy it becomes. This of corse results in kals slipping and falling here and there (though without injury since the ground is soft). The slipping isn’t really the problem, it’s what comes after. When they’re all muddy and dirty, the logical next step is of course to do mud wrestling instead of running. It’s of course fun as well, but nothing really beats stairwell racing.
The first time they’d come in contact with an elevator was when they lived for a couple months in the city. To get some kind of higher education. They would, however, be the first to admit though that they weren’t really fit for it.
When moving in to the apartment, they’d had a lot of things to move up. Not that much, since they didn’t have any furniture with them, fortunately. But there’s still a lot of stuff needing to be moved when you’re, well, moving. However much they liked stairs, K’atini didn’t look forward to hauling bags up to the seventh floor. He’d only had to deal with two flights at most before.
So then the only alternative had been the elevator. Granted, they are easy to use, even when operating them for the first time. And it’s not like they didn’t know the general procedure. They’d had television to watch like everyone else, and then you’ll just end up seeing your fair share of them whether you like it or not.
No, the problem was solely in their mind. A mind that screamed that it couldn’t possibly be safe to travel in a metal box suspended by a wire. There simply were too many movies that liked to have them break, (though mostly due to the actions of the villain, of which there were none here, but irrational fears are actually named that for a reason). During the ascent, K’atini had felt this prickling unease and fear throughout all their nerves. So once up safely on the seventh floor it had all felt rather anticlimatic.
The next time they’d used the elevator had been when they moved out.
