Here's the rest of chapter one.
Then, a pale grey wolf spoke up. “Flower, choose your three wolves and head westward,” said the alpha female, Sky. “And last, Lava. Pick your wolves and head south. Take the pups to the rendezvous Tell them where they can and cannot go,” Sky said.
Fallen Hope kept accidentally bumping into Rage on the way there. When the beta male finally stopped, he said, “You aren’t to cross the river. That is where the outsiders live. And if I find you have, you will be punished. You can eat the mice if you can catch them. You may go as far as the old pine down there. We will be gone for a while, but I assume Ulric will at least be under control.” He glanced at Ulric and ran off south.
Ulric plopped down underneath the huge weeping willow tree. “I’m gonna take a nap. Don’t disturb me,” he mumbled sleepily. Rage bounded towards the pine tree. “More mice for me,” he woofed. Fallen hope jumped onto a big rock by the river. She perched herself atop it, straining to look beyond the trees.
“I wonder what’s out there,” she said. “Get down from there, Hope,” Ulric snapped. “Don’t tell me what to-” But that’s all she could say. Fallen Hope fell into the river and was pulled downstream. “Help me!” she whimpered, coughing out mouthfuls of water. Ulric ran, searching for a spot to jump. When he found one, he lost no time. He jumped in and grabbed Fallen Hope’s scruff, churning his feeble paws in the muddy river bottoms. He grabbed hold of a rock and pulled them both onto the bank.
“I told you to get down, but you just had to stay on the rock. I was going to catch some minnows or crawdads to eat, but it looks as if any hopes of getting them before are gone. Maybe that’s why they call you Fallen Hope,” Ulric said angrily, shaking the water out of his soaked fur. Fallen Hope turned her back to him and sighed. She saw two black shapes race across a field on the forbidden side of the river.
Is that what life’s like as an outsider? Freedom with no limits? She thought. As fast as they appeared, they disappeared. I wonder what it’s like out there, Fallen Hope thought. Just then, a throaty growl rang through the rendezvous. “Alpha Star wants you back at camp,” he rasped. “Who’s he?” Fallen Hope whispered to Ulric. “That’s Fang, my father’s brother. He’s killed many, including the last alpha pair. There are many rumors about him killing his own father. It’s probably true, but I don’t know. Every time I ask Lava about it, he just walks away,” he whispered back.
Now, to Fallen Hope, Fang looked as if he was a billion years old. He had a grizzled, white muzzle and white hairs all over his neck. She wondered why he wasn’t an outsider as well. What was waiting for the three troublesome pups, I can’t quite say. Perhaps a punishment or maybe he doesn’t want to speak to them at all.
