You know in the movie DoS, whilst Thranduil is talking to Thorin, he briefly shows this horrific not-even-CS-appropriate burn scar on his face to him? So on Tumblr I found out that there's a slowly-growing movieverse headcanon about Thranduil being completely blind due to that scar. (Link is here)
:what: being a huge bookverse Tolkienite, I personally am okay with small headcanons, but this one seems... risky. I don't really know how to explain it; I just have NEVER seen someone have such a huge headcanon before. I highly doubt that this is true in the actual books, but in the movies...
I just wanted your opinions on this.
Hmmm. I find it a very fascinating speculation, though I would not be so bold as to deem it wise or true. I agree with you, Greenleaf, that the basis of this argument is relying entirely on the movie and not on the actual book. The author of the article actually admits that later on in the FAQ. It's all what's seen on screen, and coming from someone who does
not have the inside information necessary to prove it.
Now, typically something like this wouldn't bother me whatsoever, and I would handle it as any other rumor, theory, or speculation that's thrown out there on the internet (I would just shrug it off); but seeing as Thranduil is such a staple character on the journey to the Lonely Mountain, this is enough to give me a slight pause. Thranduil - blind? The points made to uphold this curious theory might seem valid enough when it comes to the screen-play... but are they? Who can say what the truth behind this matter is, unless it is coming from Lee Pace or the PJ himself. That, or more could be revealed come the last movie this winter.. though I doubt it. All in all, even after considering what has been said in that article, I think Thranuduil's actions are far too coordinated if he was really blind in both eyes. That's my opinion. He
may be blind in one eye, but I highly doubt that both eyes have become impossible to use.
