Hello to everyone! I'm personally a big power metal fan (Powerwolf, Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Beast in Black, Alestorm, ...) because I generally love music that has a lot of energy. I actually got introduced to this genre because a friend of mine was playing Powerwolf in his car. Blessed and Possessed was the album he had on, I believe. Great album!

I used to be super into Ghost but fell a little out of love with them after the release of their latest album. It just wasn't my thing. I still adore their album Infestissumam, though. And you've got to admire their theatrical nature.

Dream Evil is a band I often return to, too. Especially the album Dragonslayer.

I'll be checking out all recommendations later when I find some time to draw. Doing art and listening to metal is always a perfect combination to get work done.

Hey there!! Good to see a Power Metal Fan again that lightens this thread up a little :D I'm always down for some music with thriving energy and the good vibes this genre brings! Powerwolf and Stratovarius were one of the first (if you go by definition lol, not a fan) 'real' metalbands I fell in love with many many years ago! And they are after all these years still banger bands!!

Totally get your point with Ghost!! I discovered them when they released their third album which was like the last one that is at least at some point metal(-ish) sounding. At first I was a little disappointed when I realized that they went on in a different direction, but ngl their newer stuff grew on me!! Still a big fan! And yes they are such performers, an incredible live act!

Soo good to see someone mention Dragonslayer by Dream Evil!! In my opinion it's a must listen in the genre!! Timeless piece of music!!

So in that case I hop on on the Power Metal train for today haha:

🀘 The Chosen Ones - Dream Evil (I think this one deserves an extra spot in the list!!)
🀘 Nostos - Orion's Reign
🀘 Hall Of The Mountain King - Savatage (more Heavy Metal than Power but so so epic)
🀘 Halcyon Days - Stratovarius
🀘 There And Back Again - Twilight Force
🀘 Moria - Bloodbound
🀘 Vain Glory Opera - Edguy
🀘 Ode To Leonidas - Firewind
🀘 Triumph And Power - Grand Magus

Hey a metal thread! Nice!

I'm into a lot of folk metal. So a lot of stuff like Tyr, Eluveitie, Turisas, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Trollfest, Korpiklaani. It's always fun when I try to describe what kind of music I like to non-metalheads because I don't think they're prepared for folk metal. I once got a big group of people into Finntroll and we all went to their concert that was a few weeks later. It was great because I went by myself and I just kept running into people I knew there!

I usually say Tyr's my favorite band, but I definitely have moods where someone else will be my favorite for a while. Especially if I go to the concert because whoever I just went to see will be my favorite. Sadly there have not been many folk metal concerts lately.

Hey, good to see you here!!
I had a wild Folk Metal phase I tell you!! I looove the bands you listed, especially TΓ½r and Ensiferum hold a special place in my heart! Did you see Korpiklaani live? I want to see them so bad but I miss them every time ugh, they must be such a cool live act!!
And you are right Folk Metal isn't the thing someone who isn't familiar with metal expects when he thinks of this music lol. Some find it even worse than the regular 'angry screaming men and women out there' hahaha. But I lowkey live for those reactions!!

I would looove a Folk Festival in my country/town but that's not gonna happen haha..

Since TΓ½r isn't as well known as the others listed here I want to give them some extra credit here!!:

Yeah I've seen all of the bands I listed live! I used to go to two or more concerts a year but no one I've wanted to see has been on tour lately. Actually there is one band I would like to see on tour now but they're an opening act and playing at arenas, so that means the cheapest tickets are seats, and I'm not paying that kind of money to sit at a concert. Half the fun of going to a show is the pit!

Korpiklaani is definitely a fun band to see live! I love how the pit goes from everyone hitting each other to everyone hugging.

I love that album! Although I honestly love all of their albums.

I listen to very little prog metal but I'll look through my playlist and list some songs below!!
Looking forward for some suggestions from you!
Oh and also: Blind Guardian is a great band indeed! Also very well known in the Power Metal scene and so dang influential for so many other bands, I do love their medieval style!!

Those are my Prog Metal favorites that I can think of right now lol (you probably know all of them but Imma try haha):

🀘 Come Hell Or High Water - Native Construct
🀘 Sorceress - Opeth
🀘 Break The Silence - Seventh Wonder
🀘 Hide And Seek - Seventh Wonder
🀘 Flying Whales - Gojira
🀘 Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
🀘 Oroborus - Gojira
🀘 And Plaque Flowers The Kaleidoscope - Ne Obliviscaris

Do you know QueensrΓΏche? I love their stuff - Silent Lucidity and Is There Anybody Listening are such cool songs. I gotta dip my toes in prog metal more in general though,, it's so cool, I just never am very good at digging around in genres much πŸ˜”At the same time though I'm sure there's more that I'm just not thinking of yet... I'll have to dig around and update on what I find

TOOL and A Perfect Circle are obvs classics, so's Puscifer though, Maynard James Keenan just does cool stuff in general

edit: Oh Cockroach King is a BIG FAVE and I've gotta come back and think of songs it reminds me of better when I'm less sleepy. This is SO GOOD I gotta listen to more Haken

OOH LOVE TO SEE COCKROACH KING APPRECIATION THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY

I LOVE GOJIRA AND SEVENTH WONDER!! Opeth and TOOL are classics although some of their songs are very hit or miss for me (eternal rains will come is a bop). Surprisingly I don't listen to native construct often and almost forgot that band existed! But I love them as well, definitely a fave. I'm very into metal bands that mix several styles and instruments in their music (no wonder why prog metal is my favorite subgenre). And I'm not that familiar with QueensrΓΏche, although I've heard of them before and I know they're very influential, gonna give them a listen soon

I saw mastodon was already in the playlist but I need to mention it's the perfect mix between prog rock and prog metal, i think there's only one other album that I have a similar feeling about: Murder of the universe from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. King Gizz's metal tracks are always amazing and I know infest the rats nest is more praised by the fans but murder of the universe is pretty good too, and it's prog metal, I'm actually listening to altered beast right now.

When it comes to Haken, my favorite albums are Affinity, Vector and Virus, my personal recommendations are Veil, Puzzle Box and The Good Doctor from Vector, Messiah Complex (which is a rework of cockroach king, although the original is still better) from Virus and 1985 from Affinity. Their recent albuns have a little bit more of electronic and I saw some people complain about that, but overall i don't think it's something bad

I recently started listening to Obscura, a death and prog metal band, they're pretty cool, I personally recommend their most recent album, A Valediction. And Caligula's Horse, is another somewhat underrated prog metal band, reminds me a bit of dream theater and mastodon, my song recommendation is Marigold but honestly I could recommend. Everything from them. There's also Porcupine tree that I'm not sure if I should include here since they're very inclined to prog rock too, and Watchtower, another very influential classic.

I've been listening to a lot of power metal since it's another subgenre I'm absolutely in love with, and I noticed no one has mentioned Helloween (which i often spell with an a instead of an e because autocorrector)!! I insist that if you like power metal Helloween is a must listen! Also nightwish (also symphonic metal but I don't think that would be an issue), always lovely to hear female vocals in metal, dark passion play is my favorite album, Γ‰lan is pretty good too. My other must listen power metal bands are Shaman, Blind Guardian that I've already mentioned, Dragon Force is an obvious one, Avantasia, Sonata Arctica, ANGRA, Kamelot, and last but not least, a power metal group with a more celtic/Irish style, Tuatha de Danann

Oh well I just realized I have more power metal recs than prog metal recs

Edit: tuatha de danann is actually more folk metal than anything, but I still recommend them

Ayye thanks for updating the list!! Crazy how many classics are still missing tho!! And thank you for reminding me again of Obscura! Almost forgot these guys, they're right up my alley as I'm having a somewhat Death Metal phase (again lol) at the moment. They absolutely rock hardddd!!
I didn't know Shaman before but they sound so so magical!! I adore it when Power Metal literally drags you into another world and they do it right .. oh boy!! They kind of remind me of Avantasia just with a more oriental touch? Because they also sound so big!!
And same with Tuatha de Dannan, didn't know them but that IS a happy band, digging that!!

ohh and let's leave Porcupine Tree here as an VERY HONORABLE MENTION!! One of my favorites outside the Metal bubble!

Soo I'll put some songs from still missing well known bands here from various genres!!:

🀘 Blacklist - Exodus

Ohh I can tell that I would have loved them if I was still in my Metalcore phase, like where were they at that time?! But thank you very much for posting here, hope to see you again!!

Speaking of nostalgia!
This band was one of the first Melodic Death Metal bands I started listening, so basically the point of no return lol. Do people still listen to them?? However they still do hold a special in my heart!!

not sure if ive posted here! hi!

ive loved metal since i was a little kid and basically grew up with it. dad shared a lot of music with me like king diamond, guns n roses, system of a down, metallica, judas priest. we also have a paid radio in my moms car and i often find new metal music there since its always on the metal channels. my mom is also a fan, and for my birthday last year she took me to see rammstein! it was amazing and it was the first concert ive ever been to. i was in the stands but i could feel the fire like it was right next to me!

im always looking for new bands and songs. i love discovering new music so if anyone has any suggestions for music tell me!

for a suggestion of my own: one of my first metal albums i purchased was the devil by blue stahli. its a great listen if youve never heard of him or that album before! very nostalgic for me.

Hey there fellow Ghost fan, thanks for waking this thread from the dead lol..
Oh you are lucky!! When there's one thing my family hates, then it has to be my taste in music hahaha
Nice! I also saw them last year on their tour (for the first time too) and was totally blown away by their fire show!! Defo one of the cooler concerts I've been to!

Not quite sure what you are into but I'll throw a few songs in here that I recently discovered from Power to Death Metal! c:

🀘 Tribal - Nightwish
🀘 The Last Dragonborn - DragonForce
🀘 I Am The Moonchild - Rotting Christ
🀘 The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe - Gojira
🀘 Grabenlieder - Kanonenfieber

🀘 Deliver Us From Evil - Blind Guardian
🀘 Carry Me - Horizon Ignited
🀘 Silverseal - Elvenking
🀘 Pillars Of Serpents - Heaven Shall Burn
🀘 My Heart And The Ocean - Heaven Shall Burn
🀘 Starlight - Avantasia
🀘 Wild Autumn Wind - Caladan Brood

Btw if you have not seen it! On the first page their are lists of everything ever mentioned here!!

Hope to see you again!!
