The store ferret is worth a early-mid '10 rare which you don't have, so it's unfair to them

Well, while clearly unfair to them the event pets/items are in high demand during said event. A recent uncommon should be plenty, nothing else needs to be on their side

Cat = early 2010 rare as it was an extended release originally, and rereleases are worth the same as the original pets
Unfair to them by rarity, demand is just up to you on how you value the pets and if you're happy accepting or not
