Tacitus wrote:Also feel like it should be said this was a random free event and the artists weren't really obligated to do what we did get, guys. Let's not trash on the artists for doing what they wanted to do, re: why didn't we have x dog breed, why did we have x amount of x breed, etc.
Remember to be kind and that the artists are only humans doing their best to do free! designs on a petsite while the world is on fire, lol.
I don't want to come across as combative, because honestly this kind of comment just bums me out. The rules are clearly defined on page one regarding what is "trashing" the artists and what isn't, and I can't say I saw any comments breaking those rules. Personally, if I was an artist for CS, I'd be
looking for the "aw, I was hoping for ___" posts so I could keep those breeds in mind for the next random collection of free designs I wasn't obligated to do.
Tacitus wrote:Like most breed cuts, it has to do with what the dog was originally bred for! Bedlingtons were bred to hunt vermin. Here's a fun article I found that explains it.
Bedlingtons were bred to rid aggressive vermin like badgers, weasels, polecats, rats and martens. The “fall” on the dog’s head served to protect the dogs’ eyes and ears from the sharp teeth of its prey. It’s believed that the ear tassels acted as decoys since to grab one was to get a mouthful of fuzz.
It's likely the tail was shaved so that their prey had nothing to grab them by, or it was kept shaved to give the gamesmen a good grip on this important "handle" to grab their dog by! If you've never seen a working dog at work, it's hard to pull them off of the hunt.
That makes sense! When I see ear puffs and the legs left long, it makes me think of the classic poodle cut which was meant to protect the dog from cold water. So they need their tail covered too. But I guess the source of my error is right there in the name, lol: Bedlington
Terrier, not Bedlinton
Retriever.
Although in light of them being vermin hunters, it's interesting that the tail isn't docked like, for instance, the rat terrier or the mini Schnauzer.
Editing to make sure the first part of my post doesn't sound like I'm trying to start an argument, and also to add:
Say what??? I had to go back and look closer at this cutie to see it, but????

Spaniel ears! That is PRECIOUS!
