Personally, the cartoony look about the original lineart is why I'm very partial to it.
The previous month and this month's mentions of the original lineart kinda got me wanting to speak about it more.
I love the silly little faces of the normal rats.
Not much of a fan of realistic designs since its (honestly) a bit jarring when there's other cartoonishly-proportioned and expressive pets like CS's dogs or chickens (my opinion, obv).
I also kinda liken the exaggerated features of the rats' face to characters of older animation.
(Rat above is "Justin" from Secret of NIMH, in case anyone is wondering.)

Seems as though quite a few of the 'weirder' things that aren't all that conventionally cute/pretty/cool end up appealing to me a lot (as a whole, not just on CS). It's just a little funny, I see so much talk on linearts like horses being widely disliked for being "too realistic", but these rat edits are liked for being realistic. The power of fluff and big, cutesy eyes... haha. (Not being negative or anything here, just a fun observation.)
It's common for people to say "this thing is ugly and/or horrible" when in reality they simply mean "it's not to my tastes". Pedantic, I know... (General life and internet thing, not an attempted dig at CS users.)
