I'm far too attached to my regretful kelpie and have tickets to burn lol

Uh oh, this kelpie drowned the wrong adventurer's child.
She has an eternity to think about what she's done now.

Lore MYO Waive

Postby ExVenor » Tue Jul 08, 2025 11:12 am

1016 words for single custom trait MYO

The isolated town on the border of Northern Evra had a small population, no more than 1000 but slowly growing with time. It was established during the Evran Civil War by displaced civilians who turned the area into a haven for refugees. The nearby freshwater lake gave ample opportunity to fish and provide clean water, the isolation meant the water source wasn't tainted by the war. They had no way of knowing at the time, why the locals didn't build near that lake. Ysoria lived in that lake for a very long time, cast there as punishment centuries before, far from settlements and prey. When the refugees started building on her lake she was slowly awoken from her deep slumber. Starving as she was she didn't take precautions in her hunting, ignoring the fact she was tied to this place for eternity.

She took many lives on the nights when the moon was full and the children brave in their exploration. Of course it wasn't only children, there were also enemy scouts stopping to fill a canteen only to be dragged under. Within a month she had truly gorged herself and settled into her bed of bones more often, only bothering to stir when the moon was full or missing. When the war finally ended and soldiers were coming home, the reports of missing people in the area got more and more noticeable. Was there a faction of rebels hiding in the forest and taking out the residents of the new town as revenge? There being no signs or bodies was extremely suspicious so groups of soldiers and researchers started patrolling regularly as ordered by the Grand Duke.

The Hero of Haven was a soldier coming home after the war, she had joined the fight after her family had settled into with the rest of the refugees. Her village was burned down by those who used to be her brethren she evacuated her family and tore off the patches, switching to fight for the north and the rebellion to avenge those lost. She left her family in a safe place, kissed her teary eyed wife goodbye and joined the fight, her skill as a paladin would be invaluable.

Of course this safe place wasn't as safe as they thought. Her siblings were taken in one night, little brother tricked by the beast and sister trying to pull him free only to get stuck herself. Both lost to the lake. The Hero's wife searched for them day and night, devastated by the loss but never giving up on the search. It was during one of these searches that she was taken. Unlike most victims there was a silver amulet thrown to the shore by the older sister while being dragged in since she had one hand free. The wife saw the glitter in the mud and went to it, dropping to her knees to pull it out of the edge of the water. Her screams and wails drew many eyes, as fellow searchers moved to comfort her they saw as a head snakes out of the water and grabs the woman. Pulling her in to their horror, those nearest ran to the edge and saw the beast beneath the water. A kelpie. A rare beast of legends taking another victim.

When the war ended and the Hero of Haven returned she was told what happened. After the first flashes of grief and anguish had ripped through her and she sobbed her last tears, she got angry. She left to fight and give her family a stable life and instead had left them to their deaths. She demanded to see where this kelpie lived and spent every night guarding the shore, waiting to see this beast. After a week of waiting the full moon returned and there she was. The beast, the killer emerging from the water to stand in the silvery light of the moon. The Hero of Haven got to her feet took a breath and approached the white glowing horse as if taken in by its beauty.

The horse perks its beautiful ears towards her and stands with grace, not running from the sudden disturbance. The Hero walks carefully to the animal's side petting its nose and running her hand down its neck. Her other hand down at her side near the sword in her belt, something the animal doesn't acknowledge having taken many soldiers before. After weaving her fingers into the creatures mane the shift begins, head and mane turning to tar and the disturbing shape of bones coming through the skin. The is when the Hero's blade is pulled from sheath and imbued with smite before plunging into the head of the beast from underneath.

"My sister! My brother! MY WIFE!" she pushes the blade further through the flesh of the beast, "You will feel my pain for all of eternity you wretched creature as Hermida wills it!"

In panic the beast pulls back dragging the Hero by her stuck hand into the lake the kelpie's blood streaking the shore and blurring the water. The Hero of Haven has nothing but a smile as she takes her retribution for all the suffering this beast has caused, giving herself to her goddess' embrace in peace. Hermida hears her desperate prayer to keep this beast from harming anyone else, using divine intervention the Hero's effort is rewarded. The sword soon glows white hot vibrating in the Hero's grasp, she closes her eyes and lets out the last breath at the same time the sword flashes blindingly bright, seen for miles.

The legend lives on for many years, names lost to time but the Hero of Haven is remembered and commemorated yearly for her sacrifice. Scholars studied the incident and with access to the Grand Duke's library discovered many years before that the kelpie was sealed to that lake as punishment for previous gluttonous actions. The name listed for her was Ysoria, with this confirmation the scholars made notes of the new saga to this lake, of the Hero of Haven and Ysoria, The Punished Kelpie.
