Western Plains Brumbies

Western Plains Brumbies

Western Plains Brumbies are a breed of wild horse known for their hardiness and unusual markings. Originating from a population of feral horses, they appear in a wide range of builds. However, what they all have in common is their ability to survive in the harsh, dry conditions of the desert plains.

Genetics
These brumbies are known for their unusual coats, not found in other breeds of horses.
Almost all brumbies have markings on their coats - usually spots or stripes. It is very rare to find a brumby without markings.

Base Coats
Not much is known about the genetics that determine a brumby's base coat. However, most brumbies seem to have a base coat similar to that of their parents.

Markings
Brumbies almost always have markings.
There are many genes that can determine a brumby's markings. These are usually spotted or striped genes.
All of these genes are equally dominant. If a brumby has two different marking genes, the markings will appear as a combination of the two genes.
Markings can go above or below white areas. They sometimes also interact with white areas in strange ways.
Markings don't have to cover the whole body.
A brumby can only have two marking genes (eg ZetCas).

Zebra Stripes (ZetZet)
Vertical stripes, not too thick. Somewhat similar to stripes on tigers and zebras.

Tapir Stripes (TatTat)
Horizontal stripes, not too thick. Somewhat similar to stripes on baby tapirs.

Quoll Spots (QosQos)
Solid spots, not too large. Somewhat similar to the markings found on spotted quolls.

Cat Spots (CasCas)
Spots with an outline. Usually large.

Giraffe Spots (GisGis)
Large, solid spots that have only a small line of base coat between them. Fit together like puzzle pieces.

Markingless (mm)
If a brumby has two of these genes, it will not have any markings. This is the only recessive marking gene - if a brumby has only one of these, it will show the other marking gene as usual.

Other Traits
As well as the marking trait, there are several other traits that brumbies can have. Each are independent.

Ink (InkInk / nInk)
This trait makes all white areas on the base coat appear as black.

Inverse (VerVer / nVer)
This trait swaps all white and colourful areas on the base coat. Areas that would have been white, such as a blaze, are now colourful, and areas that would have been colourful are now white.
