Artist/Staff SearchBreed History wrote:The origins of the Highland Pointer can be traced back to Norway in the early 1930s as local hunters started to develop a breed dedicated to winter-based prey. This started with selective breeding between the English Setter and Finnish Spitz. The breed itself, however, wasn't standardized until the mid 1950s with the final introduction of the Karelian Bear Dog, putting the breed on to the road for what it is today.
This versatile breed combines loyalty, tracking, and pointing skills alongside a confident personality that's built to traverse through harsh winters. Their keen sense of smell allows them to locate prey even under feet of snow. This breed aimed to stabilize the traits of the three original genetics, making for a healthier, more sociable, and more adaptable breed overall.
This breed will serve well for any family looking for a loyal and protective companion. With high intelligence and drive, they do best when being presented with a job. Years of dedication to the breed standard, however, has shown that this breed truly shines in whatever environment trainers, owners, and families alike put them in.

Breed Standards wrote:Average Height: 17 - 25in
Average Weight: 34 - 52lbs
Coat Length: Medium/long
Coat Texture: Double-coated and straight or wavy
Coat Colors: All colors and patterns accepted (see genetics for more info)
Tail: Curly (with recessive long/straight tails)

General Rules..... »All CS rules must be followed
..... »Your CS account must be at least 1 month old to participate.
..... »There's no limit to how many pointers you can own!
..... »You must have a storage location for your pointers. On-site is preferred but off-site is allowed as long as it links back to here and is something staff can view as needed.
..... »Be kind to each other and staff!
..... »While you're welcome to develop your pointer's character in any way you'd like, please don't try to claim the breed concept as your own!
..... »You're welcome to imagine your pointer's other markings (the ones not visible) however you'd like, but this won't impact their genetics or potential appearance of their pups in any way.
..... »No AI generated content is allowed in any way.
Trading Rules..... »You must own a pointer for at least a week before trading it (gifting is the exception!)
..... »Pointers may be traded for other UMAs and Oekaki adopts as long as those species also allow cross trading.
..... »Ownership changes must be logged in the
updates thread and on the main post for the dog involved.
..... »The other party must confirm the ownership change. We prefer this to be done on the dog's page. If confirmation isn't given within 14 days, ownership may be reverted.
*It's important to note that any current limitations regarding breedings per month, training classes per month, and dogs entered per competition may be subject to change depending on demand, staffing capabilities, and more. If any changes occur updates will be posted accordingly. No retroactive additivies will be handed out should limitations increase or decrease.

What are "perks" and how do I get them for my dog?
..... »Perks can be seen as a combination of a dog's innate instincts and trained skills! Perks can be gained through parentage, training classes, and titles earned in the competition program. The only thing they influence is how your dog performs in competitions. While a dog can't lose a perk, not all perks pass on to pups (the ones that do will be noted as such!).
How does breeding work for Highland Pointers?
..... »As long as a Pointer doesn't have deafness or blindness, any Pointer has 5 breeding slots by default. They can breed with any other Pointer, regardless of genders, as long as they're not litter mates or parent/child.
Will new genetics ever be added?
..... »That's always a possibility!
Where do we store our pointers/what is a kennel thread?
..... »If you haven't seen them before, here on CS there is a forum dedicated to character storage! Some people make threads just for one species while others make a giant thread that contains all of their adopts. Either of these is acceptable! Off-site storage is okay, too, as long as it links back to this thread and can be viewed by people who don't have an account for the site you're using.
Why are some coat/body types possible yet ineligible for conformation?
..... »This is something that's true to real life! Basically certain inbreeding and recessive genes can lead to genes outside of the breed standard. Sometimes this occurs because another dog breed is sneakily introduced into the line, or because of mutations and other things (like breeding two merles together!). Having a "breed standard" is generally meant to promote healthy breeding practices, so we're taking this life-like model and applying it here!
Why are the average heights/weights of the pointers on the main page but not the adopts? Is that info important?
..... »So it's more for visual reasons, just to give you an idea of what your dog may look like! In English Setters (and other pointer breeds) its very common for the males to have a larger "standard" size than the females! But, I don't want to dictate or influence how people define their dogs. We will never produce dogs outside of the size standard for the breed, so I just wanted to include it for funs. If you want to pick a height/weight for your dog within breed standards for your own canon, you're welcome to!
How do you get a transparent image of your pointer?
..... »Once a dog is adopted, the background image is removed, making them available as a png! In order to do this, open the image in a new tab (just image not post!) In the URL find the part that says "&format=auto" change the auto to png and refresh the page. You should now be able to save them as a transparent image!
