haeon is a large planet with two suns - ero and yre - and seven moons - etsum, velt, phyr, klov, weyr, mynk, and renalt. each moon reflects colorful fractals like a mirror of the aurora borealis of earth. the days are hot, while the nights are freezing and cast in a rainbow of color. a great sea splits the earth into two large continents, and there are three floating islands of note capable of supporting life. the sea is nearly black with its depths, almost darker than the darkest nights and far more teacherous.
great cities as far as the eye could see made up more than half of the planet but that was over a thousand years ago. now jungles have overgrown these ancient places and one should be very careful when exploring unmarked paths. many a traveler has fallen beneath the jungle into the sleeping, dead cities below and theyre never seen again. adventurers, explorers, and the like all travel in groups of three or more - usually accompanied by a warlock or sorcerer of some sort.
all manner of beasts inhabit the dead cities - dragon creatures with three heads, hounds that walk in shadow, snakes the color of gold with no end. sea monsters lurk beneath the waves, mermaids lure prey from the coasts, and giant wyverns terrorize ships. the jungles are filled with predators and old, forgotten magic. huge birds fly above the dense jungle canopy - the color of fire - and they make quick prey of any predator foolish enough to be seen. this world is a dangerous one, not for the weak of mind or spirit.
the largest floating city - uweyt - supports more than one hundred thousand citizens. odd plant life weaves the base of the island, the entire thing one living organism. the top player of the island breaks down over time, forming a layer of soil similar to the main continent. it is rich in nutrients and can support many crops. the island itself gathers its nutrients from the ocean waters though a scientist or two has speculated that the floating islands will occasionally consume ocean life.
magic is known throughout the island of uweyt. small spells and charms are most common, and healing spells and potions are a close second. larger magic spells and rituals were lost with the dead cities - either buried beneath the rubble, lost in the depths, or crumbled to dust. many of these lost spells and magic were forbidden due their unknown nature, and many more were purposefully wiped from haeon's history by the main government of uweyt. some things were better left forgotten.
the second largest floating island - gava - is a much more lax society. they allow more magic, though much less of the population is capable of reaching it. it is the only floating island that stays within a short boat trip to the continent. no one knows why the floating island remains despite swift and unforgiving currents but its not like anyone could ask. the population of gava is around half of uweyt. their main exports are fruit and medicines from the continent.
the third floating island - dweyt - is a series of connected smaller islets. it is sparsley inhabited and for good reason - the islets are unstable and still forming. many smaller wildlife live on the islets including a small dragon creature with the softest downy fur - a pogwall. theyre often tamed as companions to the adventurers of uweyt as the dragon creatures can be taught to start fires on command.
there is much gold to be had uncovering the mysteries of the dead cities. elites of society will pay handsomely for new spells no matter how untested or unstable. and artifacts go for nearly twice as much. its not uncommon for the sale of a single artifact to elevate a lowly commoner and their entire family to midclass status. suddenly parties are on the agenda instead of harvesting crops.
strange beings live beneath the floating islands - beings that scare off vengeful mermaids, and give giant krakens a run for their money. none of the population has ever seen the beings - but theyve seen the after effects of their intimidation tactics and recorded some of the sounds. even the birds of the jungle avoid the floating islands, and the three headed dragons stay well and clear.
