Well, i wouldnt really want to practice my shading on a dead cat laying on the side of the road... XD
I have three cats a dog and two snakes, so i could probably practice on them though, so it wouldnt really be a problem for me... My cats are always hanging all over me and so does the dog, but the snakes usually are just hidden under the bedding. I would probably try while they are trying to catch their meal XD

You don't need to look on your own pets xD it is really hard to see on the own pets the shadeing, because they move and the shadeing moves too. the easyest way is to use a photo from a animal ^^.

I myself plan to retire as a battle mod after my particular battle is over, though that depends on whether or not BD gets new ownership and who that new owner will be. =/
