As for suggestions, I thought maybe you could try doing Black Hound if you already haven't got a NQD breed based on it. The black hound is a supernatural, demonic, or spectral dog that appears in folklore across Europe, the Americas, and England. It's one of my favorite myths since I have a small book on creepy supernatural myths from around the world and it was included. The story that I read about it, featured a Black Hound haunting a man as he went to pubs to drink alone and at first he was afraid of it, seeing it as a bad omen. Everyone could see it and assumed it was his dog. So he eventually came to accept it's presence and decided to adopt it as his dog. It helped him make friends as it was visible to others as well and I think it may have disappeared afterwards. But it might have just stopped showing itself to others except for the man that it helped.
I can't remember if that's the exact version of the tale, but I moved, so at the moment I can't find the book to directly quote it.
My mom told me that in most versions; tales about the black hound are usually a tale about being careful what you wish for as something bad might happen to grant your wish.

Thanks!! I love cryptids, and I like to draw dogs, so it was only a matter of time until I did something like this haha
The Black Dogs contain a variety of different Black Dog sightings, a lot of which have local names and legends like the Black Shuck or Church Grim (which can take other forms than just a dog but for my purposes it's only a dog X3)
I wanna say the story from your book might closer resemble the Guardian Black Dogs, which are neither an omen of death nor an arbiter of it, but instead act as guides for weary travelers and protect them from bandits/harm, but there's so many stories of the Black Dogs that I can't quite pin down which one specifically the one from your book was about lol. I believe the Gurt Dog of Sommerset was also considered a good omen/protector, I'll have to go through my books again because those are the only two off the top of my head. I'd be happy to group the benevolent ones together under the name of the Black Hounds though, if you do find your book I'd love to hear more about the ones in it!
I'd probably make them some sort of hound breed to fit the name, I'm partial to coonhounds but maybe a wolfhound or more of like a shaggy mutt mix would be cute too
