The forest was quiet, but not alarmingly so. As Birchstar slipped beneath the thorn bush that hid the entrance to Hollowclan's camp, his fur was scraped in a satisfying way. The tomcat emerged into a very thick part of the forest, smelling the air tentatively. He had not yet come across another cat that had been willing to join him in founding this clan. Or many other cats in general, for that matter. Still, his border needed to be maintained and marked properly. Perhaps he would spot an agreeable cat along the way.

Birchstar blinks, half of his vision dark. The sunlight danced through the thinnest parts of the canopy, playing along the forest floor. It was sun-high and all seemed calm. He stepped forward quietly into the forest, trotting quickly with his head and tail low. The tomcat tended to avoid open space, preferring to slink through underbrush or in shadow as he made his way around the border. Blinking again, he turned a bit more to look in the direction of a small rustling in the brush. Whatever had made the noise had gone and he continued on his way.

He was grateful for his clear vision in his left eye, and he learned to see his blindness as a strength. After all, it allowed him to see them better: the Dark Forest cats. At least that's what his father had told him that fateful night 8 moons ago at the moon pool when he was granted his nine lives. He did not understand how his ancestors had managed it, as many had been banished to the place of no stars after they died. Perhaps they were allowed there for the ceremony? There was no use dwelling on it. Still, the solemn look in his grandmother's eyes told him she knew he would follow in his fathers pawsteps. Why wouldn't he? Did she not know he was betrayed?

On that note, Birchstar pondered, that was probably why so many cats refused to join him. He rolled his eyes at the thought.
They fear what they do not understand.

As Birchstar crept along the shadowy fringe of HollowClan’s territory, the thick undergrowth clung to his pelt. The forest was quiet, but it was the sort of quiet that held its breath. He paused at a twisted bramble patch, scenting the air again. Pine. Dust. A flicker of something sharp.

Fox.

He lowered his body instinctively, ears swiveling. For a heartbeat, nothing moved. Then, a rustle. The underbrush erupted as a lean red shape lunged out with a snarl. Birchstar twisted aside just in time, the fox’s teeth snapping where his shoulder had been. He raked his claws across its muzzle, the beast yelping in surprise as the two tumbled apart.

Birchstar scrambled to his paws, vision blurring slightly as light flashed off the fox’s pelt. He hissed and crouched low, muscles tense. But instead of attacking again, the fox gave a final snarl and darted into the woods, limping slightly from the blow.

Panting, Birchstar took a moment to steady himself. A thin scratch burned along his side, more annoying than anything, but the fight could have gone much worse. His heart still thundered from the sudden attack.

Shaking his fur out, he resumed the patrol, his senses now sharply alert. As he pressed deeper into the woods to finish marking the border, his ears pricked at the sound of rustling ahead. This time, it wasn’t danger. A rabbit sat frozen beneath a patch of ferns, unaware of him. With a swift leap, Birchstar brought it down cleanly.

He gave thanks to the forest under his breath. Though the patrol had not gone as planned, he had defended his land and walked away with prey, and a renewed sense of purpose.

(Note: Since this is Birchstar’s first patrol, the minor injury sustained does not affect his HP or hunger. Injury roll shown only as an example.)

Reward: 29 XP, 5 SP (can be assigned to any border patrol stats), 1 rabbit worth 2 RP, EDIT: adding +25 crystals as well due to reward tables being edited.

"So... Now what?" Sunflight asked with a bit of cautious curiosity.
Daisystep considered this for a moment, also noting that it was surprisingly easy to think of Dusty by her new name. Of course, they'd only just met yesterday and the brown tabby's old name was practically as new to Daisystep as her new, clan name. So perhaps that was an irrelevant fact.
She shook out her fur, shedding the thoughts and turning instead to deciding what their next step should be. She listened, but the voices remained quiet and peaceful, almost contented, this morning. She was incredibly grateful for that, even if it meant stepping out in the dark of this new goal on her own.
"Well," she finally said slowly, after considering it all a moment more, "I'm not even really sure what all this territory holds so... Would you be willing to explore with me..? We could maybe even decide where the boundaries are."
Sunflight brightened.
"That sounds great, Daisystep," the younger cat says with a bit of a purr of amusement in her tone as she uses the new name, "I've done a little exploring of this place on my way here and I'm glad to find out more about it. Want to check out the forest on the other side of the clearing? It seems a bit thicker over there, might find good places for hunting later after we've looked around a bit."
Daisystep was very pleased with this initiative and eager curiosity. It mirrored her own, her paws prickling with anticipation of what they might find together.
"Sounds good." she agrees easily, already turning in that direction, "Let's go."
And so she led the way off in the strong, early morning sunlight of green-leaf, eager to begin this first patrol of her new clan.

Maplestar moved quietly at first, her paws light on the forest
floor. But as she neared a fallen log split down the middle
with age, a twig snapped under her paw. A cluster of finches
burst from the undergrowth in a flurry of wings and feathers.
Maplestar grimaced. So much for stealth.

Determined not to return empty-pawed, she raised her nose
to the air and caught a faint, musky scent. It was rabbit,
and a large one too. The trail led up a steep slope covered
in brambles. She crouched low, studying the climb ahead.

With steady movements, Maplestar leapt forward and
climbed the slope. She pulled herself up over roots and
slick stones without missing a step. At the top, she paused
on a flat ledge and listened.

Below her, in a narrow clearing surrounded by rocks,
the rabbit sat nibbling at clover. Its ears flicked lazily,
unaware of her presence.

She crept forward slowly, but a breeze picked up and
carried her scent into the clearing. The rabbit froze.

If it ran now, she would lose it. Maplestar shifted her
weight, ready to jump. Just as the rabbit sprang away,
its hind foot slipped on the damp ground. That tiny
stumble gave her the moment she needed.

She leapt from the ledge and landed hard. The jolt
rushed through her paws, but she was quick. Her jaws
closed around the rabbit’s scruff before it could get away.

Panting softly, she stood over her catch. It was thick-furred
and heavy, enough to feed a sick cat for days or restore a
warrior’s strength.

She turned back toward camp with the rabbit in her jaws
and thought of the finches she had scared off earlier.
One mistake didn’t mean failure.
Sometimes, luck was all you needed.
